I remember seeing the first peek at the Bison Field Boot from Grant Stone on Instagram. They immediately elicited an “oh, I definitely need these in my life”. Knowing that the Thunderdome was fast approaching, and these seemed to really fit the bill for unpredictable winters in Chicago. My concern was whether or not they’d be available by dome time (GS is a sponsor, they’d be crazy to not drop in time for the dome, right?) as a precaution, I ordered the Burgundy Kudu Diesel… just in case. Naturally, the Brass Boot was unveiled the day my Diesels arrived, so those went back having barely left the box. The Walnut Bison Brass Boot arrived the next day. Living within 100 miles of GS HQ often presents a true exercise in restraint, as an order reaches my doorstep well within instant gratification territory. The Field boot had an aesthetic that set it apart from others in my collection. A little extra height, that padded collar, and of course, the bison leather. Instantly eye-catching, it felt tough while being supple at the same time. The thin laces felt out of place, but after looking through my drawer of laces, a pair of Pisgah laces in Fall Camo fit the bill nicely. #Domework complete, it was time to do the thing. Their first excursion was to an apple orchard where I began the break-in process wandering through rows of trees and climbing a few to get the really good apples at the top. Never once did I really even notice them. They willingly accepted my feet and have been basically inseparable since then. Admittedly, as someone who works from home, my boots may not have gone on many domeworthy adventures, they accompanied me on countless dog walks, days of chasing my kid around, weeks of grand jury service, and a ton of quick trips where I never even bothered tying them. While the Dome has ended, they’re still sitting next to the front door ready for whatever's next.
