55 Last

55 Last: 11D

Super comfortable last, especially on the Dogger Heel and moderate heel stack. The boot as far as the footbed goes was easily broken in. An 8 to 10 hour day boot out of the box. As far as sizing goes .5 down and same width worked perfectly for me. Since purchasing my boots I’ve seen recommendations from Nicks to go one down. I think this may be something if you have a very low volume foot, but it would not be possible for me to do that.

Why I own this

Custom
Workplace Needs
Style

This boot is one that fits my the need of having a pull on boot that allows me to easily go from super nasty, muddy extreme sites to be able to slip off my boots relatively easily to enter a finished home and not have to mess with my hands getting dirty from laces. The other great thing about this boot is once cleaned up I can throw on with a pair jeans/pants and wear them out to dinner. “You can beat it up, but also take it out to dinner” Unnamed Nicks employee

Online Guide

The makers recommendation for the 55 last is half down from Brannock and same width. My feet are pretty regular, nothing too crazy going on, 99.9% of the time this works. I’ve heard recommendations of going a full-size down with the Stationmaster, but I think that may only work if you have a low volume low/instep foot.

Ordering process

Pretty easy online ordering process. A drop-down list to select the size, leather, last, out sole,heel/height etc… super straightforward. Any items that I wasn’t not familiar with was very easily to find on the site.

Use & wear

Wet Conditions
Extreme Conditions

I’ve worn these boots on construction sites for the last six months, five days a week 10 to 12 hours a day in some pretty nasty conditions. They’ve been ankle deep in mud , water, dirt, drywall dust, etc.. with everything that has been thrown at these boots they just come out the other side with a little TLC looking better and better.

Break-In

This leather is absolutely incredible. One of the most durable leathers I’ve ever had the pleasure of wearing. Almost every scratch, scrape can be brushed out as this leather is just full of oils. My care routine pretty much just consisted of wiping down/off dirt/debris with a wet rag, brushing with a horse hair brush, cleaning the edges with saddle soap and applying Bick 4 as needed. A couple times I applied James B Young Dubbin when the leather seemed to be drying out a bit. As far as the overall patina some heavyweight denim(25 oz)did a great job of indigo transfer to the shafts. Being on construction sites walking through various stuff did the rest. Overall, the boots really maintained their fantastic color, just some darkening on the toe and vamp from wear and conditioning. Overall, break-in took was about two weeks(80-120 hours) The first week on the right boot the “tongue” was really doing a number on my shin, Saturday couldn’t come quick enough. The second week it moved over to my left boot, some rubbing on the top of my big toe. At the start of the third week pretty much broken in no more rubbing or “pain” anywhere.

Satisfied with the Fit

Not necessarily on purpose but through building these boots I stumbled upon a good choice of combining the 55 last with the moderate heel stack. I’ve heard that 55 last with the classic heel stack can feel like standing on a ladder if you’re not used to it. From the first time I wore these I never had any sort of foot fatigue wearing these all day. Super comfortable .5 down from Brannock/same width. From a fit perspective everything about this boot fits me just right, no complaints on toe room, arch, length etc.

Stitching
Clicking

The overall design and construction of these boots are comparable to any of my even higher end boots. There wasn’t a stitch out of place, no sloppy welt stitching or cuts, everything was built and constructed well. Sometimes with the PNW work boots out of the box there will be scuff marks, lasting marks etc. I did not experience any of that with these boots. At six months in not a broken thread, no separation on the heel, outsole etc.. just a really solid constructed boot.

Sole & heel

Durability
Traction
Comfort

This is my first work experience with a full V bar sole and it’s been extremely durable and surprisingly non slip on the construction sites. The top llift on the heel is going need to be replaced probably in the next few months or so but other than that a lot of life left in the soles. Overall a very comfortable sole.

Final thoughts

Would Recommend
Good Value

When I pulled these out of the box I was a little concerned as these engineers kind of “dwarfed” some of the my other PNW/MTO enginners. Really quickly though the toe collapsed the vamps molded to the top of my foot. Any potential issue that I could see with being a larger engineer quickly diminished as these boots molded to my feet. Even though this boot is beefier/heavier than some of my other engineers they feel pretty light on the feet. I feel like I’m gushing over this particular boot, but I couldn’t ask for a cooler or more interesting leather and just a fantastic boot to wear five days a week for six months. My biggest worry now is what I’m going to wear for the next Dome that will be will be as good as these are… if somebody’s looking for at super comfortable boot, relatively easy on/easy off with indestructible leather, this is the boot.
