Self Edge
I was on a teacore kick so I got some boots and some jeans for that sweet sweet black fades to brown. Just need a teacore belt now.
I always size up for my thighs. So I went tag size 40 instead oy usual 38. They're perfectly loose and comfortable. I need a belt with them but that's the case with all of jeans because thick thighs save lives.
Bought straight from Self Edge and had them in less than a week. I think they're over priced on the website but they're also my favorite jeans so I don't really care. Funniest thing is that for $400 you'd think you'd get a nicer package than your pants stuffed in a USPS box with nothing else. Felt like I just received something from some dude on eBay lmao.
Work mostly. Brewery work so heavy physical movement and extreme conditions, frequent chemical and abrasives exposure. Some light traveling through the American south and soon Mexico too. Been through a few concerts and renaissance festivals in them as well. I skateboard in them from time to time. They're not my main pants for skating but they're perfectly fine to get thrashed in. Plus general life stuff, going out, holidays & special occasions.
The slubby 14oz fabric feels a lot more substantial than it actually is. The thick slub texture gives the jeans a solid hefty hand feel. However, the loose weave makes these incredibly soft and drapey. Hardly any break in and they fade fast as hell. The fabric comfortable to wear year round. Breathable enough for a Texas summer but still thick enough to be decently warm in 40°F temps. The denim is a double black fabric that fades to brown. So black warp and weft but with a brown core thread. Or I guess technically speaking it would be a brown thread that is then dyed black as night. Similar to Naked & Famous red-core fabrics. The PBJ reputation for quick and vibrant fades is alive and well in this model for sure. Day 2 I slid out skateboarding, immediately got my first fade on the side of my knee. A month in there was noticeable whiskering. 3 months and theres golden brown peaking through all over. Anytime I see my mom wearing these she keeps telling me my pants are dirty ahahaha! They've held up to scrapes and snags quite well, no tears or loose threads. The only hot spot in need of reinforcement is in the crotch/inner thigh but that's a given for all of my pants because of my big ol quads. No hole yet but there is some noticeable thinning. I wash these roughly every 3 weeks or as needed really. When they're too dirty from work or they develop any smells either from sweat or spent beer or chems then in the wash they go. I usually hand wash in my tub with detergent and scrub with a horse hair brush. Then hang dry under a fan. They have been machine washed and dried once or twice though.
I purchased these once washed the "self edge way" and didn't really notice much if any shrinkage after my own initial hot soak. I will say that after a machine wash and dry they did comfortably snug up a little but after a few wears they stretch back to normal. They are a bit big in the waist on me but I sized up on purpose for my thighs. I made the right call because I am loving the comfort and forgiving full range of motion even if I do have to wear a belt. This pair is a pretty solid straight fit. Roomy in the top block with a teensy bit of taper through the knee so they're not super wide at the leg opening. Probably my most comfortable pair of jeans. They have ample pocket room too and the way they're cut makes the pockets, and even the small 5th pocket, very easy to access even with a thick chunky belt on.
I think the attention to detail here is not only apparent but expertly curated. The tonal black stitching is the obvious choice but things like the double black leaf and black dyed copper hardware really kick these jeans up a notch. At first the jeans look completely murdered out but as they age, fade and patina the look totally flips. You get high contrast from the golden-brown core threads paired with copper hardware seemingly shadowed by the black dye. And the double black leaf holds it down to remind you of how they began. Really cool jeans to watch change over time.
10/10 would buy again. Really love these jeans all the way from the fit to the fabric to the fades. The price is only justfied by their originality and I was only convinced after owning them. Glad I took that risk though as these have easily become my favorite jeans.
