I wore these BHHB Railtown boots 4-5x a week for the entirety of the competition. Going to work? Railtown. Going out for drinks? Railtown. Taking the dogs for a walk? Railtown. A hike? Railtown. Working out at the gym? Sometimes the Railtown. They're so insanely comfortable and work in such a wide variety of situations that it was a no-brainer to wear them all the time.
This is my first experience with a waxed flesh leather and, oh man, what a fun leather! After 6 months, they look like completely different boots! The transformation has been huge: from a stiff, shiny near-black to a soft, fuzzy, warm brown in the areas that have experienced the most wear. Meanwhile, the natural Chromexel side of the the leather so soft and smooth against my feet. I can beat on them and don't have to worry about giving the leather any care other than the occasional brushing.
The Wicket & Craig harness leather was less of an optimal choice in terms of comfort compared to the waxed flesh. This leather started out suuuuuper stiff but over time, it's softened a little bit. Conditioning the leather helped loosen and soften it up a little bit. It's been fun to watch it change color with wear and exposure to the elements but I think I'd go with natural CXL next time if I were to order this configuration again.
Being a lace-to-toe design, the fit is super adjustable. The first few wears were a little rough as the toe design dug into my toes where the top cap and start of the laces meet. After a couple of days, the leather softened up and it was comfortable. Length was about perfect and I can comfortably wear them barefoot in warm conditions or with thick socks in colder conditions, depending hlon how tight I tie the laces. The comfort is just insane!
I'm very impressed with the craftsmanship and construction. I was initially surprised by the very thin, minimal stitching but it turned out not to be an issue so far with about 6 months of wear. I had one loose thread after about 4.5 months but I just burned it with a lighter and smoothed it down. The boots are holding up great and I've only come to love the unique design even more with wear.
The Cup sole has likely been the single biggest factor in the comfort of these boots. It's soft and squishy but seems to hold up about as well as something like a Vibram Christy so far. Traction is great on almost any terrain.
I would highly recommend BHHB boots, and the Railtown boot specifically to anyone. Bob was great to work with and even though I got the very first customer pair of Railtowns he made, as far as I'm concerned, they're perfect from a build quality and design standpoint. In past Thunderdomes, I'd spend the last month or two looking forward to taking a break from wearing my boots but not these! These will definitely stay in my daily routine for the foreseeable future and I look forward to wearing them this spring as summer frequently. Also, for $300 shipped for a bespoke, handmade pair of boots, I don't know how you can beat that value. 11/10 would recommend.
