I wore the hat every day in Providence and while studying abroad in London. The hat got drenched many times in the rain and it made for pretty water stained patina.
It broke in a little bit but it didn’t seem to patina very much. Since it’s on my head, it was less exposed to the elements than the boots. This hat is durable and could easily last 100 years.
This leather went from a very pale color to a very pretty warmer look. I only oiled it once, I should have oiled it more. It broke in with a tight grain break and it became slouchier over time with make the hat feel more causal and vintage.
I made this hat in a few hours, the craftsmanship looks good on the outside but on the inside it’s not perfect. It is nice to have projects that aren’t so precious because it leads to more freedom and exploration.
I would recommend a leather hat like this to people, I think it’s a cool style and it’s fun to compare the patina process to the boots. It’s definitely a slower patina but a hat like this could be worn for a lifetime.
