Walking, doing garden work, snow removal, anything that I need more muscle for.
The 55 last is very comfortable but it is quite a departure from typical boots and shoes. The arch support is extreme so people with flat feet will find these boots unwearable. The toe has decent amount of room as well which is nice but less compared to the traditional sprung toe lasts. I had my boots sized via fit sheet, and a try-on pair of boots and a phone consultation with Nicks. They nailed the size, technically its a standard size but the fit is so good it feels custom. This is 6oz heritage leather boot so its not as heavy as the Seidel work but it is still heavier than any footware I've ever owned. I have a pair of Red Wing 1917s and this boot is easily 2 or 3 times heavier. I love the profile of this boot it is reminiscent to a century ago when all shoes were mostly handmade and men had leather stacked heels like this. It looks classic and the leather has a beautiful quality to it.
The boots are going strong after 7 years of wear. The Nicks team couldn't have done a better job. Everything about the boot is made to last and is visually impressive.
The V Bar soles are extremely durable. I am just now considering a resole after 7 years because they have worn down enough to become quite slippery on wet concrete and since I now live in a snowy area so its a consideration. Otherwise these soles are perfectly comfortable and at my current pace I could wait till they're 10 to resole.
Easy on the eye compared to the more aggressive logger heel.
I paid $425 for these boots in 2019. A similar pair now would run around $700. That value is insane. If you consider cost per wear into the situation I am easily at under a dollar per wear. I tell everyone I can about Nicks I dont think I will ever be able to look at another shoe without comparing it to these again.
