I bought these at the beginning of the harshest PA winter in many years. They've been beat on pretty severely and held up pretty well.
Janus butt is called suede, but it is a rough out. The entire grain is in tact on the reverse side This is one of the most comfortable and durable leathers in my collection. Its a shame Thursday has stopped offering this leather as it is widely considered one of the best in the world and it looks better the more it's beat on.
I modified these because I felt Thursday made some bad decisions that made them feel cheap and mass produced. Since the toe is rounded anyway, I rounded out the sharp corners at the front of the outsole to make it more of a boondocker silhouette. I wore off the plastic feeling edge dressing fast and replaced it with some dubbin wax to make the natural leather midsole and heel stack shine. I also removed the stitching from the front pull tabs and pulled them out, then restitched with the matching thread from the pull tabs, and saddle stitched the holes closed. Now they are an amazing full-leather build with a great silhouette.
These are the best value chelseas I could find. They blow RM Williams out of the water with a similar design. These are whole cut using world-class roughout leather, with a leather toe puff and heel counter, full leather heelstack, and an elegant half-sole. I dont feel bad beating on them and they just keep looking and feeling better with age. The gooring is kinda shit though and the outsole has needed some extra gluing to keep it together.
