Cap Toe Boot
Cost: 200 EUR
I’m wearing these regularly for errands and walks, adding real wool insoles for warmth in the colder months (it’s 15°C/59°F here and they’re still comfy). These boots aren’t just office/carpet dwellers—instead, they've been out and about, but I avoid gravel and garden work since the sole isn’t grippy enough for that and can be slippery on smoother surfaces.
First experience with a non-pull-up leather and I’m pretty impressed. The Brown Ruffian is super supple—honestly, it feels more like a well-worn Chesterfield sofa than your average work boot leather. Nice depth, classic brown hue, and so far, it hasn’t patina’d much (maybe a bit too resilient for my dome ambitions—but at least they aren’t trashed).
Fit is spot-on. I went TTS and added wool insoles for winter comfort, but they still work great as temps warm up. Lots of space for lacing, which lets me really dial in the fit (and is honestly why I stick with Truman over British boots, where the facings are a bit too closed for my taste). No complaints here—secure and adjustable.
Shape is extremely well-balanced—a defined cap toe with the waist and vamp proportions just right. Brass hardware feels solid, leather is cut nicely, and construction feels sturdy overall. Sole is stiff and excels on pavement but isn’t ideal for off-road use or highly slick surfaces.
I nabbed these used for my first Thunderdome and have been really happy with them as a lower-maintenance, good-looking everyday boot. Quality control at Truman can be hit or miss, so buying used from another enthusiast felt less risky than trying an international return. For the price, the wear, and the versatility, I’m glad these are in my rotation. Wish they’d picked up a bit more patina, but I’m grateful they still look respectable after this season. If you want a boot that balances style, comfort, and everyday durability (but don’t need all-out traction in the wild), the Truman Cap Toe in Brown Ruffian is worth a look. Anyone else wondering how some boots get so beat up—do you guys do it on purpose?
