Truman Boot Co.
Cap Toe Boot
Cost: 200 EUR
I’ve worn these Truman Cap Toe boots regularly for everyday city use — office days, errands and general around-town wear. They’re not boots I’d take into the garden or onto rough terrain — the sole is firm and stable, but clearly designed for pavements, floors, and other predictable surfaces. Once broken in, they remained comfortable in a variety of temperatures, particularly with wool insoles in winter. For structured daily use, they’ve been excellent.
Brown Ruffian turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It’s my first leather with essentially zero pull-up and I expected it to be stiff, but it’s actually soft and supple — almost like a well-worn Chesterfield sofa. The reddish tone is beautiful and, while the leather doesn’t develop a dramatic patina, it still ages gracefully. Despite a fair amount of wear, they haven’t picked up as much patina as I expected after a Thunderdome season, but they still look smart and well kept.
The fit was spot on for me. I went for my usual size and added wool insoles for winter, and the boots stayed comfortable in mild weather and on colder days. The shape is one of the highlights — the proportions between the toe cap, vamp and waist feel balanced and classic. There's plenty of room for lacing adjustments too, which I appreciate compared to many British boots with tighter facings.
The construction is solid, with brass hardware, clean stitching and a robust sole that feels built to last. Truman’s quality control can be hit or miss, so I bought these second-hand to avoid the hassle of returning them from Europe, which worked out well. Everything on this pair is well executed. Still, with all the fuss on Reddit about current Truman boots, I'm kind of hesitant to order another pair, as returns from Europe are kind of painful. What a pity — I really became a fan of their formal last.
Hard sole with good traction on carpet. would not wear them for hiking or gardening.
Overall, these are great everyday boots: comfortable once broken in, visually balanced, and made from a surprisingly supple leather. They didn’t develop the dramatic patina I had hoped for during Thunderdome, but on the plus side, they still look clean and undamaged. I’d recommend them to anyone wanting a versatile cap-toe boot with character, but without any fuss. And if anyone has any tips on how to ‘dome’ the Brown Ruffian more aggressively, I’m all ears!
