I wore these mostly for daily wear around the house & property, performing mostly light chores along with casual wear.

The leather held up great. I wore these regularly and did not baby them, but still ended up with modest patina. Based on internet videos and photos, I expected them to patina more than they did, which leads me to believe a lot of people artificially weather their Java wax in order to hasten that fuzzy look. My pair is beginning to show that fuzzy patina, but the finish holds up longer than I thought it would. Love the look of it.

Satisfied with the Fit

Truman’s 79 last definitely fits smaller than others—90% of my boots are size 13. I think 13.5 would’ve been perfect in this last, but since it wasn’t available I went with 14. Was slightly big, which probably led to the unsightly creases along the toe box, but when laced up tightly they felt good. I like the 79’s last shape. It’s on the wider side (think Munson last), which suits my large shoe size well—Dressier lasts (ie Viberg’s 2030) don’t look good with larger foot sizes in my opinion. The thick leather and combat lug sole make it a heavy boot, so it definitely feels like you’re wearing a boot, but nothing too uncomfortable

I’ve heard the stories about Truman’s inconsistent craftsmanship but mine were spot on. I wore them heavily for 6 months and didn’t have one issue, other than the laces breaking around month 4.

I have a love-hate relationship with the commando sole. I like the rugged look and its durability, but holy cow, I could hardly walk outside at all without picking up dirt and rocks inside the tread. At least twice a week I’d find myself over the trash can with a butter knife digging mud out of the heel’s tread. If you’re going to wear it as a more casual shoe I’d consider getting a sole that’s less apt to pick up every piece of dirt and pebble you traverse over.

It’s been good.

Final thoughts

Would Recommend

Overall I love the boot. The only complaint I had that’s outside my control, is Trumans lack of availability. It seems almost impossible to pick up a pair by casually logging into their website. The only reason I happened across this pair was by seeing messages on Facebook about an impending release. And since their 79 last runs slightly small (compared to most other brands), it’s hard to find your best fit. If I were king for a day I’d recommend shrinking the catalog and concentrate on manufacturing enough of your 6 most popular models (on the leisure side) to be able to give the people what they want. I know exclusivity has its place in modern day marketing (ie Rolex & Jordan brand), but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten the boot bug and have ended up going with another brand because the Truman site was filled with a bunch of “currently not availables”.
