Heading into fall and winter, I needed a boot that could keep up with the weather here in Oregon. I work outside doing markets and other outdoor events. Went with a waxed flesh for the waterproofing and the rough out for the forgivingness as I am lifting, moving, kicking heavy work related items. I went with Truman as they a local bookmaker and heard good things so decided to support a home state maker. Most mocs usually have a wedge so I was happy to see this version with a lug sole. I set up events in uneven terrain and also do quite a bit of hiking/dog walking in the nearby forest trails so having the extra grip was a no brainer. Also, I just really love the look of the dark brown leather with the contrasting mid sole and laces that just make this bold look slick and bad ass. Overall happy with the purchase and stoke too see what they look like 6months from now.
Having read about Truman’s 20 last on their website and it being a bit roomier (usually reserved for their work/moc toe boots) I went with a 8.5D. Most other boots I go with a 9EE and usually fit great. Had to use my intuition and do the mental math of sizing a half size and going to a D would still give me enough width. The gambled paid off as they fit great with my everyday socks and with a thicker winter sock. Truman recommends sizing a full size down for their 20 Last but I knew an 8D would be too small and they were sold out of the 8EE which I think would have worked. Dropping $400 bucks on boots can be nerve racking when you’re not 100% confident in the sizing. No one like to do a return haha! Happy this size is working out.
Truman boots always seem to go fast and almost never have the common boot sizes in D and EE in stock. The size I would have gotten was out of stock so had to take a chance on the size that was. It worked out in my favor the first shot.
These boots have been through it all! Heavy rain, snow, mud…. You name it. They have held up great here in the PNW winter. These were my go to for work as a food vendor at farmers markets and other events. Great protection from heavy baking equipment. Many hikes and walks with the dog. They never leaked through even in deep puddles and mud. Super happy with the first 6 months. Cheers to many years to come
This rugged leather is truly amazing. Leather started off as a super dark almost black and now the nap on the lower half of the boots is finally showing its true colors. I love the cedar red under tones while still seeming some of the original dark waxed flesh where the pant legs cover most of the competition. Break-in was not nearly as bad as expected. It took about a full months to finish start molding to my feet. A couple heel blisters but nothing crazy. Care routine was simple thank to the roughout. Just horse hair brushing and the occasional damp cloth for mud. Looking forward to giving these babies a much needed spa day and re-waxing.
Sizing was true to what Truman website recommended. Nice amount of room for toes to wiggle. Wasn’t a big fan of the “spring toe” look but it has grown on me and I think it aided in the toe crease break in. Support is a little flat footed and could use a wee bit arch support and also would have liked a leather mid-sole as opposed to rubber for added comfort for long days on my feet. Over all a rock solid fit and happy to have no issues.
Everything checked my personally quality control check. Boots were top notch in their construction and finish. All stitches were tight and nice and straight. Heavy oz leather with heavy waxing makes it the perfect leather for the PNW. These things have scraped up against everything under the sun and just gets better.
The heavy lug sole is a beast. I won’t have to go in for a resole for a very long time. However, I do feel they are a bit overkill and you do feel the weight. After 6 months of daily use, I can say I love the look and the traction, but I think I’d probably resole to a hybrid heel wedge for more comfort as the majority of my work is on pavement. Also after 6 months of daily wear the heel stack is starting to delaminate ever so slightly but to be expected with all the rain this winter. Last thing, these deep lugs are a mud and gravel magnet which is not fun. All in all they were a good test and now I know what will work better for me for work boots.
Very happy with my choice of Truman’s and I think their 20last is great for wider feet and people that like to sprawl their toes. Would like to see a leather midsole like their upland moc toe as standard but that’s prolly how they can keep these boots sub $400. I would buy em again in a heartbeat! But of course there are too many epic boots out there to go back for another moc toe. These ones will last a lifetime no doubt!
