Badalassi Carlo Olmo Minerva Liscio

Leather Color

About

Badalassi Carlo Olmo Minerva Liscio is a vegetable-tanned leather color variant produced by Badalassi Carlo tannery in Tuscany, Italy. The color is part of the Minerva Liscio leather line, which is characterized by its smooth finish and traditional vegetable tanning methods.[1][2]

Olmo, meaning "elm" in Italian, describes a warm brown tone with reddish or orange undertones.[3] The leather features the calfskin-like ultra-fine grain typical of Minerva Liscio and develops a distinctive burnished patina with use.[1] Heritage footwear manufacturers including Oak Street Bootmakers use this specific color variant in their premium boot lines.[4]

Color characteristics

The term "Olmo" refers to the elm tree and indicates an elm-inspired brown tone in Italian leather nomenclature.[3] The color is described as brown with an orange shade, presenting as a reddish-brown leather with warm undertones that distinguish it from cooler brown tones.[3] This warm character makes it particularly suited for heritage footwear applications where rich, natural aging is desired.

The Olmo color is available across multiple Badalassi Carlo leather types beyond Minerva Liscio, including Pueblo (deliberately textured finish), Wax (oiled pullup finish), and NoFin finish.[5] Within the Pueblo line, Olmo is one of 18 color options that include Bottiglia, Bone, Cammello, Castagno, Coccinella, Cognac, Mosto, Napoli, Navy, Nero, Nazionale, Oliva, Ortensia, Paravero, Prugna, Tabacco, and Tundra.[5]

Leather production

Minerva Liscio is produced on vegetable-tanned square shoulders at the Badalassi Carlo tannery located in San Miniato, Tuscany.[2][6] The tannery, which has specialized in vegetable-tanned leather for over 50 years, is a certified member of the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata Al Vegetale (Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium).[6][7] This consortium, established in 1994 with 19 member tanneries, ensures traditional vegetable tanning standards are maintained.[6]

The production process follows traditional Tuscan methods dating back centuries.[1] Each hide is treated with extracts of trunk and bark inside wooden barrels, then greased with a mixture of animal fats before being colored in a drum.[1] Heavy bovine shoulder hides are tanned with a proprietary blend of fats and waxes, then dyed-through with deeply-penetrating dyestuffs to achieve a remarkably-consistent finish and richly-saturated color.[1]

The resulting leather is characterized by an aniline finish surface that maintains a very natural appearance.[2] Standard thicknesses range from 1.2 to 1.4 mm (3 to 3.5 oz), with custom splitting available down to 0.7mm (1.7 oz).[2] The leather is sold in whole pieces averaging 1.4 square meters (15.5 square feet) or half pieces averaging 0.7 square meters (7.7 square feet).[2]

Aging and patina

Minerva Liscio in the Olmo color grows darker and more beautiful with wear, developing dark tones because a surface polished by wear better renders the full range of color beneath.[1] The patina is characterized by burnishing, creating a smoother, shinier surface where the leather is subjected to frequent or heavy use.[1] This differs from patina development through stretching or bruising, instead resulting from the polishing action of regular wear.

The leather is initially stiff and firm, with vamps developing attractive rolls without grain break during the break-in period.[1] Rubbing the leather with a dry cloth will burnish it brighter while simultaneously moving the color darker, allowing users to actively influence the patina development.[1] Exposure to natural light helps accelerate the darkening process, and the aging continues significantly beyond the first six months of wear.[1]

The unique aging characteristics are made possible by the proprietary blend of fats and waxes used in tanning, combined with the deeply-penetrating dyestuffs that ensure color saturation throughout the leather's thickness.[1] This through-dying means that as the surface develops patina, the rich Olmo color remains consistent rather than wearing through to lighter undertones.

Applications in heritage footwear

Oak Street Bootmakers offers their Trench Boot in Badalassi Carlo Minerva Liscio Olmo leather.[4] The construction features hand-lasted 360-degree Goodyear welt construction with a partially-structured toe, black Goodyear Chemigum half sole, and stacked leather heel with Goodyear Chemigum toplift.[4] The boots include a flat Barbour welt with hand-brushed edge stain, calfskin vamp lining, tone-on-tone stitching, antique brass eyelets, and Cougar #50 rawhide laces.[4]

Jakkrabbits Bootmaker produces service boots and monkey boots using Badalassi Carlo Olmo Minerva leather, demonstrating the color's versatility across different boot styles.[8] The warm brown tone of Olmo complements the traditional aesthetic of heritage work boots while providing the aging characteristics that heritage footwear enthusiasts seek.

The color's availability in multiple Badalassi Carlo leather types allows bootmakers to select the specific finish characteristics that best suit their design intent, whether the smooth elegance of Minerva Liscio, the rugged character of Pueblo, or the pull-up properties of Wax leather.[5]
