Jodhpur Boots

Model

About

The Jodhpur Boots are ankle boots manufactured by Carmina Shoemaker on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Designed similarly to riding boots with a rounded toe and low heel, the model features two pieces of leather fastened with a strap and buckle that wraps around the ankle. All versions use Goodyear welt construction with calf lining, following traditional techniques developed by Charles Goodyear in the 1860s.

Carmina produces jodhpur boots across multiple last options including the Forest, Simpson, and Rain lasts, each offering different toe shapes and fit profiles. The boots are available with various leather options sourced from European tanneries, and can be configured with leather, York, or Alfil soles depending on intended use. Production takes place in Inca, Mallorca, where the Carmina family has manufactured footwear since 1866.

Design and construction

The jodhpur boot design consists of two parts, each made from a single piece of leather: the instep and the closures. These components are fastened together with a strap and buckle that wraps around the ankle. The boots feature a rounded toe and low heel characteristic of riding boot styles.

Production involves over 120 steps and requires up to four days to complete a single pair. Expert craftsmen manufacture the boots by hand in Mallorca, following techniques created by Charles Goodyear in 1869. Each pair includes calf lining and Goodyear welt construction as standard features.

Goodyear welt construction

Charles Goodyear created the machine in 1872 that enabled manufacturing highly resistant shoes that could be easily resoled. The construction method uses a leather welt strip approximately 1.5 centimeters wide that goes around the whole edge of the upper, either as a 360-degree or 270-degree welt.

Carmina craftsmen develop their own cork paste that is tucked into the space between the insole and outsole. This cork filling allows the shoe to adapt to the wearer's step after a couple of days of use. A metal shoe shank is inserted in the heel area to reinforce the structure and offer greater stability.

The leather sole is attached and sewn to the welt using closed channel construction, where the sole is cut to create a leather flap under which the stitching is concealed. The double-welt design provides longevity, breathability, custom fit, water resistance, and easy resoling capabilities.

Leather options

Carmina offers several leather types for jodhpur boots, sourced from European tanneries known for quality calf leather production.

Vegano leather

Vegano leather consists of calf skin without the final finish applied at the tannery. This approach allows customers to create custom patinas and burnishing effects through wear and treatment. The leather develops character over time based on individual use patterns.

Boxcalf leather

Boxcalf is one of Carmina's most popular leather options for dress footwear. The company sources tan and brown boxcalf from Tannerie D'Annonay in France, while black boxcalf comes from the Weinheimer tannery in Germany. Boxcalf leathers receive their final color and shine at the tannery, which improves with time and develops a natural patina through wear.

Vitello calf

Vitello calf leather is used for women's shoes. Despite its relative thinness compared to other calf leathers, this material maintains high quality and results in durable footwear.

Last options

Carmina produces jodhpur boots across three primary lasts, each offering different fit characteristics and aesthetic profiles.

Forest last

The Forest last represents Carmina's most archetypal and early last design, featuring a classic and timeless appearance. It has a rounded toe, regular instep, and more room across the forepart. The Forest last is one of the oldest in Carmina's collection.

Simpson last

The Simpson last is characterized as chiseled and sleek, described as a narrow last in E width. Carmina recommends customers go up half a size compared to their usual size when purchasing boots on the Simpson last, as it fits slightly narrower at the toe area.

Rain last

The Rain last is one of Carmina's most versatile and appreciated options, featuring a subtly squared-off toe and regular fitting in both the instep and toe area. Its proportions make it ideal for casual models with an elegant appearance. The Rain last is Carmina's first suggestion for someone looking for their first pair from the company.

Sole configurations

Carmina offers multiple sole options for jodhpur boots, allowing buyers to select based on intended use and formality requirements.

Leather sole

The leather sole represents the most elegant option for dress shoes. Carmina manufactures these high-quality leather soles in-house, providing a traditional dress shoe aesthetic and feel.

York sole

The York sole is slightly thicker than the Tomir sole and still contains some leather parts. This option does not cover the sole completely with rubber, allowing it to be worn with formal attire while providing more traction than a full leather sole.

Alfil sole

The Alfil sole is a thinner rubber option that represents a middle ground between rubber and leather soles. This sole type is usually selected for office shoes or dress shoes with heavier use patterns, offering durability and weather resistance.

Available models

Carmina produces several jodhpur boot models with different leather, last, and sole combinations.
