Leather Type

About

Buckingham Full Grain is a bovine full-grain leather produced by Charles F. Stead at Sheepscar Tannery in Leeds, England. The leather features a pure aniline finish with medium-gloss treatment, resulting in a subtle pull-up effect and rich color depth. Buckingham Full Grain is manufactured on heavy weight double butts ranging from 2.0 to 2.4mm thickness.

The leather utilizes the same finishing technique as Charles F. Stead's Classic Kudu leather, incorporating a slightly milled grain aspect that creates a naturally tumbled appearance. This classic rugged leather displays accentuated natural grain and character typical of high-quality full-grain materials. The aniline dyeing process preserves the leather's natural surface characteristics, including growth marks and natural variations.

Specifications and characteristics

Buckingham Full Grain is produced from bovine hides as full-grain leather, meaning it retains the natural outer grain layer without surface correction or coating. The material is constructed using heavy weight double butts with a consistent thickness range of 2.0 to 2.4mm. The pure aniline finish applied during manufacturing allows the leather to display its natural characteristics without producing a uniform surface.

The leather exhibits a subtle pull-up effect, a characteristic of high-quality full-grain materials treated with oils, waxes, and dyes during tanning. When the leather is pulled or stretched, the oils and waxes migrate, causing the color to lighten in areas of stress or friction. This pull-up behavior is considered a mark of quality in leather manufacturing. The slightly milled grain aspect contributes to the naturally tumbled appearance, creating a classic rugged aesthetic with accentuated natural grain patterns.

The aniline finishing process uses soluble dyes that color the leather while preserving the hide's natural surface texture. Full-grain aniline leather lacks surface coating, making it one of the most supple and soft leather types available. Only high-quality hides are suitable for aniline finishing, as this treatment does not mask surface imperfections. The leather displays natural features including growth marks, insect bites, scratches, and healed scars that are characteristic of genuine full-grain leather.

Manufacturing process

Charles F. Stead produces Buckingham Full Grain using the same finishing technique developed for the company's Classic Kudu leather line. The manufacturing process involves treating the leather with oils, waxes, and dyes during tanning to achieve the distinctive pull-up characteristics. The pure aniline dyeing method colors the leather without creating uniformity, allowing each hide's natural surface features to remain visible.

The company sources hides primarily from Argentina and New Zealand, which arrive pre-treated through either mineral processing with chrome or plant-based tanning methods. At Sheepscar Tannery, the leather undergoes a distinctive re-tannage process designed to reduce fat content, resulting in more densely packed leather fibers. The entire manufacturing process takes approximately 28 days and involves 15 production stages to complete.

The medium-gloss finish is applied to provide an attractive sheen while maintaining the leather's natural characteristics. This finishing technique creates the rich depth of color that distinguishes Buckingham Full Grain from other leather types. The process results in a soft and supple texture with a buttery feel that improves with age and wear.

Products and applications

Dr. Martens uses Buckingham Full Grain leather in the construction of the Church Monkey Boot, a 5-eye monkey boot design from the company's 1970s archive. The Church boot features unlined ankles for a softer feel and vintage appearance, with the Buckingham leather contributing to the boot's classic rugged aesthetic. The boot's construction includes Goodyear welting, with details such as tonal upper stitching, gunmetal eyelets, and tonal laces. Each pair features a Charles F. Stead swing tag to identify the leather's origin.

The Church Monkey Boot demonstrates the leather's suitability for heritage-style footwear applications, where its naturally tumbled appearance and full-grain character align with vintage design elements. The leather's accentuated natural grain and pull-up effect enhance the boot's visual character, creating dynamic color variations as the material flexes during wear.

Care and maintenance

Full-grain leather with aniline finish requires specific care practices to maintain its characteristics and appearance. For routine cleaning, use a soft microfiber cloth with warm water and mild hand soap. Dampen the cloth with the soapy water solution, wring it out thoroughly so it remains only slightly damp, and gently wipe the leather surface without scrubbing. Avoid using leather cleaners and saddle soap, as these products can damage the aniline finish and natural fiber structure.

Regular conditioning is essential to prevent the leather from drying out or developing cracks. Apply a quality leather conditioner to keep the material soft and maintain its supple texture. Clean the leather with soap and water once every few months, supplemented by occasional wiping with a slightly damp cloth between thorough cleanings.

Store Buckingham Full Grain products in a dry space away from direct sunlight, as excessive light exposure can fade the color and damage the leather's natural fibers. Avoid exposing the leather to excessive moisture, which can compromise its structural integrity. The leather develops a unique patina over time through natural aging, with the oils and waxes in the material contributing to enhanced character and depth as the leather matures through regular wear.
