C.F. Stead Classic Blue Crazy Cow

Leather Color

About

Classic Blue is a color option in the Crazy Cow pull-up leather line produced by Charles F. Stead, a tannery in Leeds, England. The leather features a blue tone created through a wax layer that produces natural antique distressing and color depth characteristic of the Crazy Cow flesh-out leather family.

Classic Blue Crazy Cow combines the intense pull-up properties and flesh-out construction of the Crazy Cow line with a blue colorway. The leather is chrome tanned cowhide finished with aniline dyes and a semi-glazed surface treatment, creating a semi-bright appearance with deep color variations.

Characteristics

Classic Blue Crazy Cow is a flesh-out leather, finished on the flesh side of the hide to showcase the natural characteristics and texture of the leather. The wax impregnation and top coat provide a slight shine on the grain surface while creating the depth of color that defines the Crazy Cow line. The leather can be used with either the grain side or suede side facing outward, offering versatility in finished applications.

The leather exhibits intense pull-up characteristics, with the waxed finish creating deep highs and lows of color across the surface. This pull-up effect, combined with the natural antiquing from the tanning process, produces the distressed and rugged texture that distinguishes Crazy Cow from other flesh-out leathers. The aniline finish allows the natural grain and character of the hide to remain visible beneath the wax treatment.

Technical specifications

Classic Blue Crazy Cow is produced as chrome tanned double butt cowhide with a thickness of 1.8-2.0mm, equivalent to approximately 4.5-5 ounces in weight. Individual skins average 12-16 square feet in size. The leather receives aniline dyes during processing, followed by wax impregnation and a semi-glazed finish coat that provides the characteristic semi-bright appearance while maintaining the supple feel expected from flesh-out leathers.

The manufacturing process traps a layer of wax between the natural antiquing achieved during tanning and the final aniline top finish. This layered treatment creates the wonderful depth of color and burnishing properties that allow the leather to develop character with use and handling.

Applications

The glossier finish of Classic Blue Crazy Cow makes it particularly suitable for bags and leather goods accessories, where the semi-bright appearance and color depth can be displayed to full effect. The leather is also used for watch straps and small pattern work requiring a more polished appearance than traditional roughout or suede finishes.

While the Crazy Cow line is used by heritage bootmakers for footwear applications, Classic Blue represents a color option that may have limited availability in finished boot products. The 1.8-2.0mm thickness and supple characteristics make the leather suitable for various applications where flexibility and visual character are desired alongside the durability of chrome tanned construction.
