C.F. Stead Royal Purple Crazy Cow

Leather Color

About

Royal Purple is a purple colorway of Crazy Cow, the chrome-tanned pull-up leather produced by Charles F. Stead in Leeds, England. The color features an intense purple hue created through the leather's characteristic wax layer and aniline top finish combination, producing the depth of color and natural antique distressed appearance that defines the Crazy Cow line.

As part of the Crazy Cow family, Royal Purple shares the core technical specifications and characteristics of the base leather while offering a distinct color option for makers and craftspeople working with heritage leather goods.

Color characteristics

Royal Purple displays a rich purple tone achieved through aniline dyes applied during the chrome tanning process. The leather's wax layer, trapped between natural antiquing and the aniline top finish, creates depth in the purple color while contributing to the semi-shiny finish characteristic of Crazy Cow leathers.

The pull-up properties inherent to Crazy Cow cause the Royal Purple colorway to lighten in color when the leather is stretched during wear. This produces color variation across surfaces where the leather flexes or bends, creating a unique worn-in effect over time as different areas of finished products develop varying shades of purple based on stress points and wear patterns.

Technical specifications

Royal Purple Crazy Cow is processed using the same specifications as other Crazy Cow colorways. The leather measures 1.8 to 2.0 millimeters in thickness, equivalent to 4.5 to 5.0 ounces by weight. Individual skins typically range from 12 to 16 square feet in size.

The leather is chrome-tanned from double butt cowhide and features the flesh-out construction that allows use with either the grain or suede side exposed. The semi-glazed finish and aniline dye treatment create the purple color while maintaining the supple feel characteristic of Crazy Cow leathers. The leather retains all natural characteristics and features visible on the flesh side.

Applications

Royal Purple Crazy Cow is available for use in bags, satchels, journals, holders, and leather goods applications where the color provides aesthetic options for makers and craftspeople. Suppliers offer the leather in panel sizes including A5 (210 by 148 millimeters), A4 (297 by 210 millimeters), and A3 (420 by 297 millimeters) for smaller projects, as well as full hides for larger applications.

In footwear, Royal Purple has been used by custom bootmakers. Fortis Boots produced a Wholecut Chelsea boot in Royal Purple Crazy Cow, demonstrating the colorway's application in heritage footwear construction.

Market availability

Royal Purple Crazy Cow is distributed through craft leather suppliers including Leather4Craft and specialty retailers on platforms such as Etsy. The colorway is sold both as pre-cut panel sizes for smaller projects and as full individual skins for larger applications requiring more material.

The leather is available alongside other Crazy Cow colorways including Coach, Classic Blue, Ginger, Samba, Snuff, and approximately 10 other color options in the Crazy Cow line.
