About

C.F. Stead Kudu Nubuck is a nubuck-finished leather made from African kudu antelope hides by Charles F. Stead, a British tannery based in Leeds, England. The leather features a buffed grain surface that displays the natural scars and markings acquired by kudu antelope living in African thorn brush and dense vegetation. C.F. Stead processes kudu hides using their proprietary Janus tannage method, which creates soft suede on the reverse side while maintaining a nubuck finish on the grain side.

The leather combines exceptional softness with structural durability, characteristics derived from the kudu antelope's naturally supple yet strong hide. Heritage footwear manufacturers use C.F. Stead Kudu Nubuck for boots and shoes valued for their unique appearance, comfortable break-in period, and distinctive aging properties.

Material source and origin

C.F. Stead sources kudu hides from the Greater Kudu, an antelope species native to southern Africa. The hides come from seasonal licensed culls conducted to control animal populations in the region. Kudu antelope live in thick thorn brush and tall vegetation in southwestern Africa, where they regularly graze amongst thorny bushes and sharp thickets. This habitat creates natural scratches, scars, and cuts on the animals' hides, which are preserved during the tanning process.

Each kudu hide displays unique natural markings from the animal's life in the wild. These authentic scars and blemishes become defining characteristics of the finished leather, making every hide distinct.

Specifications

C.F. Stead Kudu Nubuck measures 2.0-2.2 mm in thickness. Individual skins average 12-16 square feet in usable area. The leather weighs 4.5-5.5 oz (1.8-2.2 mm) in the waxy variant, with pieces ranging from 10-22 square feet depending on the individual animal.

The hide size and thickness make the leather suitable for footwear construction, particularly boots requiring both durability and flexibility. The variation in size between individual skins reflects the natural differences in kudu antelope dimensions.

Tanning and processing

Charles F. Stead processes kudu hides using their Janus tannage method, a proprietary chrome tanning process. This tannage creates leather with soft suede on the reverse side and nubuck finish on the grain side. The process maintains the hide's inherent suppleness while developing high structural strength.

The grain side undergoes nubuck processing, which lightly buffs the surface to create a velvet-like texture. This processing reveals and highlights the natural blemishes, scars, and cuts present on the hide. The chrome tanning gives the leather a soft temper with a stretchy tensile structure, making it responsive to wear while maintaining durability.

Characteristics

C.F. Stead Kudu Nubuck has a soft and supple texture immediately upon handling. The grain side displays authentic natural scars and markings that vary significantly across each hide. The surface shows natural blemishes including scars and cuts from the animal's life in African brush terrain.

The leather combines exceptional softness with high structural strength, a characteristic derived from the kudu antelope's naturally tough yet pliable hide. The nubuck finish creates a beautiful array of natural surface variations, with character that differs greatly between individual skins and even across different areas of the same hide.

The leather maintains excellent structural durability while remaining highly responsive to marks and wear. This combination of softness and strength makes the material instantly comfortable in footwear applications.

Performance and aging

C.F. Stead Kudu Nubuck responds quickly to wear, developing patina at a moderate pace. The leather's chrome tanning and stretchy structure make it reactive to daily use, with visible character changes appearing relatively quickly compared to some other leather types.

The material ages through use, with the leather imprinting the wearer's patterns and habits over time. Character varies across the hide, with different areas developing patina at different rates based on natural grain variations and wear patterns. The leather requires low maintenance and shows minimal tendency toward excessive dryness, though regular conditioning prevents the material from losing its suppleness during extended wear periods.

The leather shows good structural recovery against mild scratches and scuffs. The nubuck surface is designed to develop character through use, with marks and wear contributing to the leather's evolving appearance rather than detracting from it.

Usage in footwear

Heritage footwear manufacturers use C.F. Stead Kudu Nubuck for boots and shoes, with the leather particularly well-suited for boot construction. The 2.0-2.2 mm thickness provides adequate structure for footwear while maintaining the flexibility needed for comfortable wear. The leather's soft and supple nature makes footwear instantly comfortable, reducing break-in time compared to stiffer leather types.

The natural markings and casual aesthetic of the leather appeal to heritage footwear makers producing boots with distinctive character. The unique appearance of each hide creates variation between individual pairs of boots, making each item distinctive. Beyond footwear, the leather also finds use in small leather goods and upholstery applications where its combination of durability and soft hand proves advantageous.
