C.F. Stead Black Kudu Reverse is a black-colored variant of Kudu Reverse leather, a dual-surface material made from kudu antelope hides native to southern Africa. The leather features soft suede on the reverse side and nubuck on the grain side, treated with C.F. Stead's specialized Janus tannage process. The black color variant is manufactured with the same characteristics as other Kudu Reverse colors, including thickness ranging from 1.6 to 2.2 millimeters and an average skin size of 13 to 15 square feet.
Black Kudu Reverse exhibits the dual-surface construction characteristic of all Kudu Reverse leathers. The reverse side presents a soft suede surface described as the "cashmere of suedes" due to its buttery texture, while the grain side features nubuck finish with natural blemishes including scars and cuts from the animal's life. These natural markings are more superficial than structural and are highlighted through the nubuck processing. The leather maintains high strength despite the soft texture, achieved through the fiber structure's compatibility with C.F. Stead's Janus tannage technique.
The leather develops patina through wear, forming grooves and creases with minimal break-in period required. The suppleness of the material results in highly responsive patina development, with deep creasing patterns emerging from the malleable composition. Each pair of boots or shoes develops unique wear patterns based on individual use. The aging process produces a rich, rugged appearance over time.
Regular maintenance involves using a horse hair brush with leather conditioner applied in swift, intentional movements. Conditioning frequency depends on individual climate and use conditions. Leather protector can be applied to seams and upper leather surfaces for water resistance. The cleaning process follows general leather care instructions, with conditioning performed occasionally to prevent the leather from drying out.
Allen Edmonds manufactured the Caen boots in black kudu reverse, originally featured in their Fall 2017 catalogue, though the model has been discontinued. Santalum produces Service Boots using black kudu reverse leather. The material's dual-surface design and natural characteristics make it suitable for heritage footwear construction.
