About

The Chukka Boot is a low ankle boot style produced by Joseph Cheaney & Sons, an English footwear manufacturer based in Northamptonshire. The boot features two or three eyelets with an open lacing system and a rounded toe, characterizing the traditional chukka design. Cheaney produces multiple chukka boot models, with the Jackie III R serving as one of the company's most recognizable designs. All Cheaney chukka boots are handcrafted in the company's Northamptonshire factory using Goodyear welt construction.

Chukka boots originated in India and were primarily worn by the British Army stationed there, particularly by off-duty polo players. The name "chukka" derives from the playing period in polo, called a chukka or chukker. This boot style offers versatility, being suitable for both casual wear and more polished looks, and can be worn across all seasons.

Jackie III R model

The Jackie III R represents one of Cheaney's most iconic chukka boot designs and has been reimagined in various color options throughout its production history. The boot features a traditional three-eyelet derby design mounted on a Goodyear welted studded rubber sole. Each pair is fully handcrafted in the Northamptonshire factory.

The Jackie III R is built on Cheaney's 125 last, which was developed in 2011 to coincide with the company's 125th anniversary. This last features an elongated almond toe and a sleek silhouette, representing one of Cheaney's most celebrated last shapes. The 125 last serves as the foundation for multiple styles across the company's product range.

The model is available in multiple materials including black calf leather, brown pony suede, mahogany grain leather, walnut grain leather, dark leaf calf leather, and maracca suede. Fit options include F (average), G (wide), and H (extra wide) to accommodate different foot shapes.

Dallington R model

The Dallington R chukka boot features a three-eyelet design that creates a balanced silhouette. This model is constructed on the 12508 last, which was introduced in 2009 as a versatile update to the classic 4436 last. The 12508 provides a substantial presence on the foot with a generous, rounded toe and hosts a variety of styles across Cheaney's collection.

The Dallington R incorporates storm-welted construction and features a Dainite sole rather than the studded rubber sole found on the Jackie III R. The boot is available in F (average) fit. As of 2025, the Dallington R retails for £445. The model is offered in brown waxy leather, black waxy leather, and sandstone waxy kudu.

Construction

All Cheaney chukka boots utilize Goodyear welt construction, considered one of the most reliable footwear-making methods. This construction technique allows the sole to be stitched to the upper and enables the boots to be resoled. Alex Pardey, store manager of Cheaney's Covent Garden location, stated that "we want all of our boots to be practical above all – aesthetics are secondary."

The Goodyear welt construction enables Cheaney to offer a sole and heel repair service. With proper care, Cheaney shoes and boots can provide long-term service. The company's craftspeople rebuild shoes using genuine components and reconstruct them to original specifications, with soles capable of being replaced multiple times.

Materials

Cheaney sources high-grade leather from tanneries in the United Kingdom and abroad. Calf leather forms the foundation of most styles due to its classic appeal, hardwearing nature, and adaptability. The company evaluates new leather treatments and characteristics to expand its collection.

Waxy Commander leather

Several Dallington R variants utilize Waxy Commander leather, which was developed in the 1990s at the request of an English shoe brand seeking rugged, hardwearing, and water-resistant characteristics. C.F. Stead developed and named the leather "Waxy Commander."

The unique tannage process involves shrinking the hide by up to 25 percent to tighten its fiber structure, enhancing strength and impermeability. The leather is heavily waxed during tanning, resulting in a water-resistant product with a stubble-like texture that reveals depth with every crease. The waxy leather develops a patina over time, naturally lightening and gaining texture with wear.

Studded rubber sole

The Jackie III R models feature a studded rubber sole produced by the Harboro Rubber Company since the early 1900s. This sole design represents a hallmark of English Goodyear welted footwear, featuring a distinctive tread pattern that prevents soil retention and simplifies cleaning. The studded pattern provides durability and comfort while remaining highly durable and long-lasting.

Manufacturing

All Cheaney footwear is handcrafted at the company's Northamptonshire factory, which has occupied the same site since 1896 when Joseph Cheaney and his brother Arthur relocated operations there. Northamptonshire is recognized as a center of quality English shoemaking. During the first 80 years of business, the factory produced shoes exclusively for premium retailers worldwide.

The company maintains a focus on craftsmanship and attention to detail while using only high-quality materials. In 1964, the business was sold to Church's English Shoes to ensure the continuation of the family legacy.
