The Eden Boot is a Veldtschoen-constructed ankle boot handcrafted by Joseph Cheaney & Sons exclusively for Private White V.C. The boot features classic smart leather construction with enhanced waterproofing, utilizing a method where the upper leather is turned outwards over the welt to deflect water away from the interior.
Joseph Cheaney & Sons manufactures the Eden Boot at their Northamptonshire factory using traditional benchmade techniques. The boot is available in dark walnut grain leather and Maracca color options, with full leather lining and signature Private White V.C. x Cheaney branding on the insole.
The Eden Boot employs Veldtschoen construction, a Goodyear welting variant derived from the Dutch term for "field shoe." This method distinguishes itself from traditional Goodyear welting by turning the upper leather outward to lay on top of the visible welt section, concealing the feather line where materials join. The construction creates a 360-degree perimeter that disperses water and mud over the edge of the sole, providing enhanced waterproofing compared to standard welted construction.
The upper leather splays outward rather than folding inward, making the stitching that holds the upper to the welt clearly visible from the outside. Water running down the boot's upper is deflected away from the join where the upper meets the sole.
The boot features a 100 percent leather upper with a leather insole and Goodyear welted Dainite sole and heel. The hardware consists of five copper eyelets and three ski hooks for secure lacing. Beneath the insole, cork filling provides cushioning while a wooden beechwood shank supports the arch. The Dainite studded rubber outsole measures approximately 10mm thick, paired with a 2mm leather midsole and 2mm storm welt with carved lip, creating a total sole thickness of approximately 12mm.
Joseph Cheaney & Sons established operations in 1886 in Desborough, Northamptonshire. The company moved to its current purpose-built factory in 1896, designed to house all aspects of shoemaking from clicking to final polishing. The facility continues to cut out and close Cheaney shoes in Desborough, maintaining production methods that require over 200 manufacturing steps per shoe.
The Eden Boot's construction involves hand-burnished scotch grain calf leather uppers and soft glove-leather lining, with leather stiffeners in the toe and heel counter. A team of 120 expert craftspeople work in the factory, with each Cheaney shoe requiring eight weeks to complete. Following a management buy-out by Jonathan and William Church in August 2009, the company committed to continuing production of high-quality shoes entirely in Northamptonshire.
