The Mountain Trail is a hiking boot manufactured by Danner based on a vintage silhouette from the 1960s. First released in the 1960s, the boot was designed as a lightweight and flexible hiking option with a one-piece leather construction that helps prevent debris and water from entering through the tongue area. Built in Danner's Portland, Oregon factory, the Mountain Trail features stitchdown construction and is eligible for the company's recrafting services.
The Mountain Trail traces its origins to the 1960s, when it was first introduced as a hiking boot engineered for flexibility, light weight, and comfort. The design was based on a vintage silhouette from that era, representing Danner's approach to functional outdoor footwear during a period of growing interest in recreational hiking and outdoor activities.
The Mountain Trail employs stitchdown construction, a method performed by hand at Danner's Portland factory. In this process, the upper is stitched directly onto the rubber outsole, creating a wider platform that provides increased stability underfoot. The stitchdown method ensures no separation between the boot's components, contributing to the boot's durability and long-term structural integrity. Workers add fiberglass shanks in the arch area for additional support. The upper is attached to the outsole using T700 weight thread, while the outsole itself uses T90 thread.
The Mountain Trail features a full-grain domestically-tanned leather upper. Danner subjects its leather to six different tests before selection, ensuring quality standards are met. Full-grain leathers represent the strongest and most durable form of leather, retaining the natural grain pattern of the hide. The boot includes a leather lining throughout the interior.
The one-piece leather design eliminates openings in the tongue area, helping to keep out debris and water during use. The outsole is a Vibram Gumlite unit, which provides lightweight cushioning with solid tread for traction on varied terrain.
The Mountain Trail is built from top to bottom in Danner's Portland, Oregon factory, which spans 59,000 square feet and employs over 200 skilled craftspeople with decades of specialized experience. The facility is the largest footwear manufacturing facility on the West Coast and produces approximately 40 percent of all Danner boot product. Manufacturing combines modern machining techniques such as laser-scan cutting with World War II-era machines.
Leather is sourced from at least six tanneries across the United States. Every piece of hide is inspected by hand using a five-point process to ensure quality before being incorporated into production.
The Mountain Trail qualifies for Danner's recrafting program, which extends the life of the boot through part replacement, leather care, and restitching services. Most USA-made styles and boots with stitchdown construction are eligible for this program. The Portland factory has the capacity to repair and rebuild over 150 different Danner boot models. All Danner footwear is backed by a 365-day warranty.
