About

The Trevor is a Buckaroo-style western boot manufactured by Drew's Boots and named in honor of John Trevor Postles, an accomplished cobbler and former Drew's employee who created the company's first DRH Buckaroo style. The boot represents a Buckaroo-style offering featuring Drew's traditional craftsmanship approach, featuring fully vegetable-tanned leather construction throughout and traditional Goodyear welted construction methods.

Built with Drew's signature craftsmanship philosophy, The Trevor incorporates a 3/4 Goodyear welt with an additional rubber midsole layer, providing both resoleable construction and enhanced durability. The boot is designed to achieve a "glove-like" true-to-size fit without requiring a painful break-in period, addressing common concerns with heritage western footwear.

Heritage and naming

The Trevor boot line was created to honor John Trevor Postles, who served as a craftsman at Drew's Boots and was responsible for creating the company's first DRH Buckaroo style, establishing the foundation for the company's western boot specialization. The Trevor boot line serves as a lasting tribute to his contributions to American bootmaking and the western heritage footwear industry.

Construction and materials

Goodyear welt construction

The Trevor employs traditional Goodyear welted construction combined with Drew's specific modifications to enhance durability and comfort. The construction process utilizes a 3/4 Goodyear welt supplemented by an additional rubber midsole layer, creating a hybrid approach that maintains the resoleable benefits of welted construction while adding modern performance elements.

The welting process involves two sets of stitches that ensure both easy resoleability and virtually waterproof construction. The upper is stitched to a leather welt, and the outside of the welt is stitched to the outsole, creating an additional barrier to water penetration. The space enclosed by the welt is filled with cork or other cushioning material that molds to the wearer's feet over time, providing personalized comfort.

Vegetable-tanned leather components

All leather components in The Trevor are constructed using vegetable-tanned leather, including the insoles, outsoles, heel counters, and stacked leather heel bases. This traditional tanning method uses natural plant extracts containing tannins rather than synthetic chemicals, resulting in leather with distinctive characteristics that improve with age.

Drew's Boots sources full vegetable-tanned leather from select tanneries, ensuring consistent quality across all components. The heel counter construction uses full veg-tan leather without any plastic components, maintaining the boot's traditional construction approach while providing necessary structural support.

Manufacturing process

Hand-lasting and construction methods

The Trevor boots are produced using traditional hand-lasting techniques by craftsmen with decades of shoemaking experience, including some third-generation bootmakers. Drew's employs an industry-first pre-molded leather insole that measures 5 to 5.5 millimeters thick and is precisely molded to match the shape of the last used in construction.

The manufacturing process incorporates eco-friendly materials where possible, including the use of rice husk material for the toe box structure rather than traditional synthetic alternatives. This approach aligns with the vegetable-tanned leather philosophy while providing necessary structural elements for boot shape and durability.

Quality control and finishing

Drew's manufacturing process includes specialized pressing techniques to ensure proper sole adhesion and reduce common boot problems. The company uses a high-pressure hydraulic press combined with a press pad that matches the exact negative shape of the Vibram 430 outsole, creating an extremely strong bond that reduces squeaking and delamination issues common in poorly constructed footwear.

All boots undergo small batch production methods to guarantee consistent quality control throughout the manufacturing process. This approach allows for individual attention to construction details while maintaining the traditional bootmaking standards established during the company's 105-year history.

Fit and comfort characteristics

Sizing and break-in period

The Trevor is engineered to provide a "glove-like" fit that runs true to size when properly fitted. The last and leather development process specifically targets this comfortable fit profile, eliminating the painful break-in period traditionally associated with western boots and heritage footwear.

The boot achieves this comfort through carefully selected leather thickness and the pre-molded insole design that provides immediate support rather than requiring extended wearing to achieve proper foot conformation. This approach addresses buyer concerns about comfort while maintaining the structural integrity expected in heritage western footwear.

Aging and patina development

The vegetable-tanned leather construction allows The Trevor to develop a unique patina over time based on individual wearing patterns and environmental exposure. The leather initially appears in its natural color but will darken and develop character as it is exposed to air, light, skin oils, and other environmental factors during normal wear.

This patination process is a distinctive characteristic of vegetable-tanned leather footwear, as each pair develops individual character that reflects the owner's specific usage patterns. The leather becomes more supple with wear while maintaining its structural properties, eventually developing the rich color and texture prized by heritage footwear enthusiasts.
