The Service Boot is a handmade heritage boot produced by Flame Panda, a small family-operated workshop in Xinxiang, Henan, China. The boot represents one of the best examples of the service style, featuring substantial presence without being overly chunky and well-balanced proportions. Service boots by Flame Panda are hand-welted using traditional construction methods and premium materials sourced from Italian and North American tanneries.
Flame Panda's Service Boot is made entirely by a small family workshop led by founder Peng Meng, who is considered one of the best bootmakers in the world. The boots are constructed using 360° storm welt with embedded eversion welt techniques and feature exceptional comfort with plenty of toebox room while maintaining snug heel support.
The Service Boot employs hand-welted construction with custom-made steel shanks and high-quality materials sourced from Italy and North America. All boots use Italian midsoles and feature Peng's signature 360° storm welt with embedded eversion welt construction method. The construction process includes hand stitching the welt to the midsole and outsole, with very tight, parallel, and uniform welt stitching.
Multiple construction methods are available, including double row stitchdown construction as an alternative to the standard welted approach. The boots feature a Dr Sole black cork half sole with 270 handwelt construction, ensuring durability and the ability to withstand multiple resoles.
The Service Boot is available in several premium leather options, including natural roughout horsebutt and black Maryam horsebutt from Italian tanneries. Additional materials include Italian vegetable tanned cowhide with hand over dye and shell cordovan from multiple tanneries including Horween. Peng filters out a significant portion of leather as unusable to ensure consistent break-in quality and aging characteristics.
Multiple last options are available for the Service Boot, including lasts 108, 181, and 102, allowing for different fit profiles and aesthetic preferences. The boot features an interior heel counter lined in suede, structured toe construction, and unlined shaft for comfort and breathability.
Flame Panda operates without an official website, with all orders placed through direct messages on Instagram (@flamepanda11). The Service Boot pricing starts at $600 USD for standard leather options, with horse hide variants costing $685 USD including global shipping. All boots are made-to-measure, requiring detailed foot measurements and a collaborative fitting process with Peng.
Current wait times exceed 1.5 years due to the handmade nature of the boots and the workshop's commitment to quality. Peng is known for being helpful and collaborative during the ordering process, providing constructive input and suggestions rather than simply fulfilling requests.
