GrindMoss Green

Conceria Puccini Atillio Grind Moss Green

Leather Color

About

Moss Green is one of six color options available in the Grind leather line produced by Conceria Puccini Attilio in Tuscany, Italy. The color is applied to 3.5-4 oz full grain double shoulder leather through traditional vegetable tanning methods using natural dyes that penetrate the leather fibers.

Grind Moss Green is sold through retailers including Lonsdale Leather in Canada, where it is priced from $24.20 CAD for one square foot to $270 CAD for 15 square feet. The leather features a smooth grain surface with oily pull-up characteristics, creating a dynamic finish where the material lightens when bent or stretched.

Specifications

Grind Moss Green is cut as full grain double shoulder, meaning the leather excludes the belly portion of the hide, which provides better yield and more consistent quality across the surface. The leather measures 3.5-4 oz in weight, approximately 1.4-1.6 mm in thickness, and exhibits a medium to firm temper suitable for bags, footwear, leather goods, and accessories.

The full grain surface retains the natural top layer of the hide, preserving the authentic grain pattern and allowing the leather to develop character through use. Conceria Puccini sources the hides from premium cattle in France and Northern Europe before processing them at their facility in Ponte a Egola, San Miniato.

Color and Finish

The Moss Green color is achieved through natural dyes that penetrate the leather fibers rather than sitting on the surface. As with all natural dyed leather, the exact shade may vary slightly from hide to hide and between different production runs. The six colors available in the Grind line are Moss Green, Natural, Ruggine (rust tone), Dark Brown, Black, and Red.

The oily pull-up finish creates a distinctive effect where the leather temporarily lightens in color when bent, pulled, or stressed, revealing the underlying grain structure. This characteristic makes each piece of Moss Green leather unique in how it responds to manipulation and wear. The smooth grain surface receives finishing through pads and spraying machines that color the leather and create a warm, transparent appearance.

Tanning Process

Conceria Puccini Attilio employs traditional Tuscan vegetable tanning methods for the Grind line, using natural tannins extracted from the bark, trunk, leaves, and fruits of chestnut, quebracho, and mimosa plants. The process takes 40-60 days and uses pure water in wooden drums, avoiding aggressive chemicals throughout the production cycle.

The tannery combines these natural tannins with oils and fatliquors to provide elasticity and unique coloring properties to the leather. Manual finishing techniques include felt and amber stone polishing, where rolls lined with felt and rolls made with amber stones rub the surface to create a natural shine. The tannery follows slow drying processes that allow the leather to cure gradually, contributing to its long-term durability.

Attilio Puccini founded the tannery in 1986 in Ponte a Egola, having begun working in tanneries at age 14 during the 1950s post-war era. The facility is now managed by his children Marco and Sandra, who continue the family tradition of vegetable tanning. Conceria Puccini Attilio is a founding member of the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium).

Characteristics and Aging

As a natural material, Grind Moss Green exhibits variations typical of genuine full-grain leather, including stretch marks, fat lines, scars, and occasional branding marks from the animal's life. These natural characteristics are considered signs of quality rather than defects, reflecting the tannery's philosophy of embracing hides with natural marks as "living material worthy of respect."

The vegetable tanning process creates leather that is initially stiff but becomes softer and more supple with use. The material develops a patina through regular exposure to sun, daily handling, water, and conditioning, with the aging process unique to each piece based on how it is used. The Moss Green color will deepen and develop character over time, with the underlying grain structure becoming more pronounced.

Vegetable tanned leather lacks synthetic coatings, allowing it to develop a rich patina with minimal treatment of the natural fibers. The leather produces a sweet, woody, and rich aroma characteristic of vegetable tanning, distinct from the chemical odors of chrome-tanned alternatives. Products made from vegetable tanned leather are known to last for decades, while chrome-tanned alternatives often crack, peel, and split after just a few years of use.
