Conceria Puccini Atillio Grind Red

Leather Color

About

Red is one of six color options available for Grind, a vegetable-tanned leather produced by Conceria Puccini Attilio in San Miniato, Tuscany, Italy. The red colorway features the same full-grain double shoulder construction, 3.5-4 ounce weight, and oily pull-up finish characteristic of the Grind leather line, distinguished by its bold red coloring applied through Puccini's transparent finishing techniques that preserve the leather's natural grain patterns beneath the color layer.

Like all Grind variants, the red version is manufactured using traditional Tuscan vegetable tanning methods with natural tannins from chestnut, quebracho, and mimosa plants. The leather is sourced from premium cattle hides from France and Northern Europe and exhibits the characteristic pull-up effect where the material lightens in color when bent or flexed, then returns to its original darker tone when relaxed.

Color Characteristics

The red colorway is applied using Puccini Attilio's layered finishing process that combines pads and spraying machines to color the full-grain surface while maintaining a warm and transparent appearance. This approach allows the leather's natural grain to remain visible beneath the red dye, distinguishing it from opaque pigment finishes that conceal the hide's surface characteristics.

The red color exhibits the characteristic pull-up effect inherent to Grind leather's oily finish. When the leather is bent, stretched, or flexed, the red tone lightens in those areas as the oils migrate within the finish, creating dynamic color variation across the surface. This effect is particularly noticeable in high-flex areas of footwear and bags, where repeated bending creates lighter highlights against the deeper red base tone.

Natural dyes are used in the finishing process, contributing to the leather's capacity for patina development. The red colorway may exhibit slight variations in tone between hides due to the natural characteristics of the full-grain material and the transparent finishing method, which allows the underlying hide color to influence the final appearance.

Aging and Patina Development

As vegetable-tanned leather, the red variant develops patina through exposure to light, oils from handling, and environmental conditions. The patina development occurs gradually, with the red tone evolving over time as the leather ages. High-contact areas darken and develop richer color depth from oil absorption, while areas exposed to consistent light may show subtle tone shifts.

The oily pull-up finish helps the leather resist minor scratches and scuffs that would appear as permanent marks on non-oiled finishes. When surface marks occur, the natural oils in the finish can be encouraged to migrate into scratched areas through rubbing or light conditioning, helping to blend minor imperfections into the leather's developing character.

The full-grain surface retains all natural characteristics of the hide, including stretch marks, fat lines, and scars that become more pronounced as the leather ages and develops patina. These natural marks are considered indicators of authentic full-grain material and contribute to each piece's unique appearance over time.

Applications

The red colorway is suitable for the same applications as other Grind variants, with the bold color providing distinctive aesthetic options for leather goods, footwear, bags, and accessories. At 3.5-4 ounce weight with medium-firm temper, the leather provides appropriate substance for boot and shoe uppers where structured construction is desired while maintaining comfort during wear.

For bags and small leather goods, the red variant offers visual impact while retaining the functional characteristics of vegetable-tanned leather. The oily finish helps resist the minor abrasions common in daily use, while the color's capacity for patina development creates visual interest that enhances with age rather than appearing worn.

The material is sold in various square footage options including one, three, five, 10, and 15 square foot quantities through leather retailers such as Lonsdale Leather, with availability varying based on production runs and retailer inventory.
