Horween Ink Cavalier

Leather Color

About

Ink Cavalier is a leather produced by the Horween Leather Company in Chicago, featuring a distinctive deep blue color and enhanced pull-up characteristics. This leather represents a variation of Horween's Cavalier line, which is designed to achieve brighter, more vibrant colors than the original Chromexcel process allows.

Ink Cavalier is characterized by its chrome-vegetable combination tanning process and hot-stuffing with proprietary oils and waxes, resulting in a leather that displays dynamic color variations when flexed or bent. The leather serves heritage footwear manufacturers who seek distinctive blue coloration with the durability and aging characteristics that Horween leathers provide for premium boots and shoes.

Leather characteristics

Ink Cavalier undergoes a chrome tanning process followed by heavy vegetable re-tanning, combining the softness benefits of chrome tanning with the structure provided by vegetable tannins. The leather is hot-stuffed with a rich blend of proprietary oils and waxes, similar to other Horween leather varieties but with slight adjustments to the tannage that enable brighter color achievement.

The leather maintains a slightly less oily surface finish compared to standard Chromexcel, with a medium temper that provides more rigidity than its softer counterpart. This firmness results from the increased wax content used during the hot-stuffing process, combined with an ironing finishing technique that creates a smooth, slightly brighter appearance.

Available in multiple weight specifications, Ink Cavalier is offered in 3.5/4oz, 4.5/5oz, 6/7oz, and 8/10oz thicknesses to accommodate different manufacturing applications. The leather exhibits natural grain patterns and gentle softness while maintaining the strong pull-up effect and bright color characteristics that define the Cavalier line.

Color properties

The Ink color displays several different hues ranging from light to deep blue, with the potential to show hints of purple undertones depending on lighting conditions. This color variation exemplifies the vibrant pull-up effect that makes Cavalier leathers distinctive, where the color lightens and shifts dynamically when the leather is bent or flexed.

When leather is folded or flexed, the oils and greases within create a tonal effect on the surface, temporarily displacing the color before it can be buffed back to near-original appearance. This pull-up characteristic provides the leather with a unique marbled look that develops and changes with use, adding visual interest that improves with age.

The bright blue coloration demonstrates the enhanced color capabilities achieved through Cavalier's specialized tanning process, which allows for more transparent and striking hues than possible with traditional aniline Chromexcel methods. The leather naturally darkens with wear while creating a unique custom patina that reflects individual usage patterns.

Manufacturing and applications

Several premium boot manufacturers utilize Horween Ink Cavalier leather for distinctive heritage footwear production. Crown Northampton, based in England, produces both Overstone Hi Derby boots and Derby sneakers using this leather, incorporating their handmade construction methods with Horween's Chicago-tanned materials.

Gustin manufactures Classic boots using Cavalier leather in their Maine facility, employing 360-degree Blake Welt construction with Vibram 232 rubber soles. John Lofgren Bootmaker produces Moc Toe boots featuring Cavalier uppers, emphasizing comfort and durability in their construction approach.

The leather proves suitable for heritage boots, moccasins, casual shoes, and belts, with applications extending to dress shoes and upscale sneakers where unique colors provide distinctive visual appeal. Manufacturers select Ink Cavalier when projects require the combination of Horween's reputation for quality with the specific aesthetic properties that bright blue coloration provides.

Horween heritage

The Horween Leather Company, founded in 1905 by Isadore Horween, operates from its Chicago facility where this leather is produced using traditional methods refined over more than a century. The company processes approximately 4,000 cowhides and 1,000 horsehides weekly, producing about 120,000 square feet of leather in their five-story facility at 2015 North Elston Avenue.

As Chicago's sole remaining tannery, down from 40 tanneries that once operated in the city, Horween maintains its family-owned status through five generations of leadership. The company employs 160 unionized workers and generates annual revenues of approximately $25 million while preserving hand-made leather production techniques.

Horween's development of Aniline Chromexcel in 1911 established the foundation for later innovations including the Cavalier line, which uses similar time-honored techniques and formulas developed nearly 100 years ago. The company's mission emphasizes using the finest hides, oils, dyes, and finishes to produce leather that meets their quality standards regardless of production costs.
