The PaRLOR SkAR is an engineer boot model designed and manufactured by KREOSOTE, a custom bootmaking operation based near St. Louis. The boot draws its name and design inspiration from the 1936 lifestyle of American drifters who traveled Blue Highways and backroads to frequent private gentleman's underground gambling clubs, where "skars" were worn as badges of survival. First released in October 2021 as a limited edition of 10 custom pairs, the model incorporates influences from seven different American and European shoemaking time periods spanning from the 1800s to the 1940s.
The boot features made-to-measure construction using traditional European and American shoemaking methods. Each pair is handcrafted by KREOSOTE founder JD Gabbard, requiring 50 to 100 hours of work per pair. The PaRLOR SkAR utilizes a custom 36KPSE last profile that was developed over two years with nine prototype iterations.
The PaRLOR SkAR design incorporates prominent influences from the American Civil War US Cavalry Boot (1861-1865) and the WWI 1917 US Cavalry Boot. The boot is designed to modernize the engineer boot silhouette for contemporary pant styles while maintaining traditional engineering boot aesthetics. The design features a slightly squared-off "overlook" toe profile for a distinctive silhouette, combined with form-fitting heel, waist, and toe construction. The dropped buckle line and beveled heel breast contribute to the updated profile.
The PaRLOR SkAR is built using Wickett & Craig Harness 5.5oz full grain vegetable tanned leather for the uppers. The original 2021 edition featured hand-blended dark juniper green dyes applied using a multi-ink dyed process with seven additional oil applications, creating depth through layers of browns, blacks, and greens over a natural russet base.
Construction specifications include an 11-inch boot height with hand-welted 360-degree German cut channel/holdfast in-sole construction. The boot incorporates a hammered flat metal nail shank and traditional engineer style vegetable tanned 3oz back-curve heel counters. The heel consists of beveled/straight cut leather measuring 1.5 inches with a KREOSOTE rubber heel cap measuring half an inch. A removable vegetable tanned leather insert with 1/8 inch Blue-Cloud orthotic material provides the footbed.
Hardware components include solid brass buckles measuring half an inch for the top buckle and one inch for the bottom buckle. All brass buckles are handmade by American artisan Michael Randazzo at Huron Brass Works. Thread specifications include Black A&E American nylon bonded #138 for construction, with the outsole stitched using a Gritzner hand-crank machine with A&E #415 white thread.
All KREOSOTE boots are custom built using made-to-measure (MTM) construction from each client's personal foot calculations and outlined foot tracings.
The original PaRLOR SkAR edition released in October 2021 consisted of 10 custom pairs in a juniper green colorway and sold out on October 15, 2021. Since the initial release, KREOSOTE has introduced three additional variants of the PaRLOR SkAR line.
The PaRLOR SkAR-SPRAY gUN launched in 2022 as a limited edition of 15 pairs. This variant features a Kustom Car Kulture-inspired over-dye technique applied to the leather.
The PaRLOR SkAR-MOrPH, introduced in 2023, was designed to complement form-fitted MTM dress styles. This variant uses hatch grain embossed Wickett & Craig Harness 7oz full grain vegetable tanned leather and carries a 4.5 year wait list with full payment required at time of ordering.
The PaRLOR SkAR-AKOTA Series released on February 17, 2024 as a limited edition of 15 pairs. Each variant maintains the core construction principles and made-to-measure approach of the original model while incorporating distinct aesthetic treatments and leather selections.
