About

The Aldwych Toe-Cap Oxford is a classic toe cap Oxford shoe manufactured by Loake, an English shoemaker founded in 1880. Part of the 1880 Classic collection, the shoe features Goodyear welted construction and is described by Loake as one of their iconic styles. The Aldwych is handcrafted at Loake's Wood Street factory in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England, on the Capital last with F fitting for leather sole versions and G fitting for rubber sole variants.

The shoe is fully leather lined with a leather insole and uses premium calf leather uppers. Available in multiple finishes including black, dark brown, mahogany, and tan, the Aldwych is designed for formal occasions and is included in Loake's wedding shoe collection.

Construction and manufacturing

The Aldwych features Goodyear welted construction, an intricate process that takes up to eight weeks to complete each pair. The method involves stitching the upper to a welt, which is then attached to the sole, providing durability and allowing the shoes to be resoled. This traditional construction technique has origins that can be traced back over 300 years.

Loake manufactures the Aldwych at their Wood Street factory in Kettering, Northamptonshire, which has operated since 1894. Since the company's founding in 1880, Loake has produced over 60 million pairs of Goodyear welted shoes. Each pair of 1880 collection shoes requires approximately eight weeks of production time using only the highest quality materials.

Materials and sole

The shoe is constructed from premium calf leather uppers with a fully leather-lined interior and leather insole providing comfort and breathability. The Aldwych is available with two sole options: a traditional leather sole or a rubber sole for enhanced durability and grip. The leather sole version features a heel height of 24mm.

The interior construction includes cushioned leather insoles that deliver superior comfort. The premium calf leather used in the uppers is characteristic of the 1880 collection's commitment to using the finest materials available.

Last and fit

The Aldwych is built on the Capital last, one of Loake's most versatile and popular lasts. The Capital last features a slightly chiseled toe shape and is designed to accommodate the majority of men's feet in the United Kingdom. The shoe is made to an F fitting (medium wide) for leather sole versions and a wider G fitting for rubber sole variants. The Capital last runs true to size and has been a popular choice with customers since its introduction, with currently nine styles made on this last.

Loake uses over 37 different lasts in their lineup. Modern lasts are produced using computer-operated lathes carved from solid plastic, ensuring consistency and eliminating discrepancies between individual molds. English shoemakers in Northampton typically offer shoes in width fittings E (narrow), F (medium wide), G (wide), or H (extra wide), with approximately 1/4 inch difference in girth measurement between fittings in the same size.

Collection

The Aldwych belongs to the 1880 Classic collection, which represents Loake's premium range of shoes and boots. All styles in this collection are manufactured at the Wood Street factory in Kettering, Northamptonshire, and compete with significantly more expensive brands in terms of materials and craftsmanship. The collection reflects the traditional heritage of Loake dating back to 1880, when the company was founded by brothers William, John, and Thomas Loake. The 1880 Classic collection represents over 140 years of shoemaking experience and features styles that have become icons in their own right.
