Loafer

Model

About

The Loafer was a slip-on shoe manufactured by Mark Albert Boots from the mid-2010s until the company's closure in 2022. [1][4] The model featured a wholecut construction, distinguishing it from traditional multi-piece loafer designs. [1]

Mark Albert Boots was founded by Mark Barbera in 2015 when he was a college freshman. [2] The company operated from a factory in Somerset, Pennsylvania that had been in operation since 1948 and employed approximately 50 workers. [2] Barbera's great-grandfather, Joe Barbera, was a Sicilian immigrant master shoemaker who had advised the original factory founders. [2]

Design and materials

The Loafer utilized a wholecut design, meaning the upper was cut from a single piece of leather rather than assembled from multiple panels. [1] This construction method creates a cleaner aesthetic with fewer visible seams.

The model was available in several leather options:

  • •

Black roughout: An undyed leather with the flesh side facing outward [1]

  • •

Granite Kudu: Sourced from C.F. Stead Tannery in England [4]

  • •

    Cinnamon Pebble Grain: A full-grain, American-tanned leather with a textured surface [4]

  • The interior featured a pigskin leather lining throughout. [3]

    Construction

The Loafer was manufactured in Pennsylvania using 360-degree Goodyear welt construction, allowing the shoes to be resoled when the outsole wears down. [3] This construction method involves stitching the upper to a welt strip, which is then stitched to the outsole, creating a durable bond that can be disassembled for repair. The model included a comfort insole for cushioning. [3]

    Availability

Prior to the company's closure in 2022, the Loafer was offered at a retail price of $300. [4] Sale pricing brought the Granite Kudu version to $225 and the Cinnamon Pebble Grain version to $199. [4] All standard sizes were manufactured in D width. [4]

Mark Albert Boots achieved 246% growth in one year after transitioning to a direct-to-consumer sales model. [2] However, the company ceased operations in 2022. [4]
