The Road Champ is a motor-cycle engineer boot manufactured by Mister Freedom. The boot features an all-original pattern inspired by American engineer and work boots from the 1930s to 1950s, a period when this boot type was favored by motorcyclists, servicemen, and workers. Development began in 2006 with over 2.5 years of research and development from hide selection and dyeing to last carving and final sole tacks and polishing, with the design copyrighted in 2008.
The Road Champ development process started in 2006 and extended over 2.5 years, encompassing all aspects of bootmaking from initial hide selection and dyeing through last carving and final details including sole tacks and polishing. The design received copyright protection in 2008. The all-original Mister Freedom pattern draws inspiration from American engineer and work boots manufactured during the 1930s through 1950s period, when these boots were commonly worn by motorcyclists, servicemen, and workers.
The boots are cobbler made by hand in a small shoemaker workshop established in the 1960s in the United States. The design features an all-original MF pattern with a hand-carved last and a low toe profile. The double sole consists of all solid leather made of high quality dense and sturdy material. Authentic New Old Stock Cat's Paw rubber heels provide traction and durability. The boots incorporate hard-to-find steel buckle hardware and include a fully functioning strap that holds the boot secure at the ankle.
The Road Champ employs an exclusive leather treatment and coloring process. Rather than being dip-dyed, the hides are painted with a three-color coating applied to the skin side while the flesh side remains natural. Over time, the leather develops a patina with tones of reddish brown, chocolate, olive, and black. The olive color appears inside the roll top band and top strap gusset.
The boots are available in brown and black versions. The brown version features an all leather sole with Cat's Paw heels. In spring 2017, a special edition was released with a New Old Stock Nitrene rubber sole.
The Road Champ is sized to accommodate wearing thick socks during winter and thin leather insoles for warmer weather. Fit around the instep, heel, and ankle can be controlled by adjusting the strap. The general sizing recommendation is to order half a size down from sneaker size.
Production proceeds at approximately two pairs per week. The boots were not in regular production after 2019. The original retail price for the brown tanned leather version was $949.95. As of May 2025, a release for the brown Road Champ is scheduled for late 2026, with pricing and specifications subject to change.
