About

Motor Service Boots are handcrafted leather boots produced by Japanese leather goods manufacturer Motor. Part of the "Motor New Vintage" line, these service boots feature Italian horsebutt leather uppers, vegetable tanning, and a distinctive sculptural last designed by the Motoike family. The boots use 270-degree flat welt construction with hand-dyed finishes and are manufactured in Motor's Tottori Prefecture workshop in Japan.

Motor offers service boots primarily in two models: the #1020 boot priced at ¥99,000 and the #1030 service shoe at ¥94,600. Both styles showcase Motor's approach to combining traditional Japanese leather craftsmanship with contemporary design, featuring darker burnished toes and heels on vegetable-tanned horsehide uppers.

Construction

Motor Service Boots employ 270-degree flat welt construction, with the welt extending around the boot except at the heel seam. This construction method requires thick leather and produces a slightly more watertight boot due to tighter stitching compared to other construction methods. The boots feature woodsman heels with matte black edge dye matching the burnishing on the leather uppers.

The "New Vintage" service boots incorporate a sculptural last with a shaped insole designed to position the wearer's center of gravity above the arch. Motor's construction demonstrates high stitches per inch with dense, even stitching throughout. The edges and heels are hand-carved and finished, reflecting the company's emphasis on precise craftsmanship.

Materials

Motor Service Boots use vegetable-tanned horsehide leather imported from Italian tanneries. The company applies hand-dyeing techniques where thin layers of pigment are painted onto the leather surface after tanning, creating a distinctive finish. The darker burnishing on the toe and heel areas provides visual contrast while the matte black edge dye on the welt and sole creates a cohesive aesthetic.

The vegetable tanning process used for Motor's leather follows traditional slow-tanning methods utilizing plant-derived tannins rather than chemical processes. This tanning approach aligns with Japanese leatherworking traditions emphasizing natural materials and extended production timelines.

Models

The Motor New Vintage #1020 Italian Horsebutt Service Boot retails for ¥99,000 (tax included) and is offered in black and brown colorways. The boot is available in sizes seven through 11, corresponding to 25-29 centimeters. The #1020 features full boot-height uppers with the standard Motor sculptural last and 270-degree flat welt construction.

The #1030 Italian Horsebutt Service Shoe offers a lower-cut alternative at ¥94,600. This model is available in sizes seven through 10 (25-28 centimeters) and shares the same leather and construction methods as the #1020 boot. Both models accept optional customization for an additional ¥2,750 surcharge. As of December 2025, both the #1020 and #1030 models are sold out on Motor's official online store.

Availability

Motor Service Boots are produced in limited quantities at the company's Tottori workshop in Japan. The boots sell primarily in the Japanese domestic market through Motor's Tokyo locations in the Aoyama neighborhood and regional stores in Yonago and Okayama. The company operates an online store at motostyle.jp for both domestic and international orders.

Motor maintains focus on small-batch production rather than international market expansion. This approach results in limited availability, with popular models frequently selling out. The company's service boots are difficult to obtain even within Japan, as domestic demand typically exceeds production capacity.
