New Republic was founded in 2016 by designer Mark McNairy. McNairy has worked on collaborations with brands such as Adidas, Timberland, and Pharrell. The company originated under The Menlo Club, a subscription service for men's fashion. It later launched as its own independent label.

New Republic designs all footwear in Los Angeles. The brand manufactures its shoes in factories located in China. Production takes place in small batches.
Construction and materials
New Republic uses genuine leather and suede for the uppers of many shoes. Some products feature recycled materials. The linings combine microsuede and split leather. Insoles are made of molded EVA foam covered with TENCEL mesh.
