ID Card Wallet
I’ve carried this wallet every day from the start of the dome. Im an office worker during the week, and a bird watching, hiker/gardener the rest of the time so it’s covered a lot of miles.
My brother in law brought me the goat hide from a road side vendor in Arusha Tanzania so I know nothing about how it was made, but it seems to be tough as nails and has some amazing texture. The veg tan on the outside was a scrap I got from my 85yr old friend who gifted me his old leather working supplies and got me into the hobby. A box of scrap leather came with the tools, and had been sitting in his shop for a looooong time….so I’m guessing this piece was decades old. Both the goad and veg tan seemed very dry when I put the wallet together so I put a bunch of Bick 4 on the wallet when it was new and the 2 or 3 times over the first couple of months just to get it to seem hydrated. No cracking or other issues so far. Tons of sentimental value since all of the leather pieces were gifted from people I love!
This is the best designed wallet I’ve made so far, but still not perfect. Stitching and leather are holding up great. The inside pockets are just about perfect with the front pockets holing cards securely but with easy access due to the angled profile and the back pocket holding cash more securely although still retrievable. My one gripe in the front ID card slot, out of which my Liscence tends to slide a bit…. Gotta figure that out for the next iteration
If you’re reading this and love leather and haven’t tried making a wallet yet, you’ve got to give it a go. Super fun.
