Currently, I am working full-time at my retail job while attending university to become an elementary science teacher. I wear my boots almost every day for my 8-hour shifts and during my required classroom observations. Rain or shine, I made sure to wear them most days.
The S.B. Foot Hawthorne Muleskinner leather has darkened and softened over time. The break-in process was fairly easy—after about a week and a half, they became very comfortable. I believe that when it comes to caring for boots, less is more. I did not condition them and instead let the natural oils develop on their own. The most I did was brush them with a horsehair brush every 3–4 weeks.
The fit of the No. 17 last is great. I typically wear a size 9–9.5D in most boots, and the 9E fit perfectly, providing good space around the instep and toes.
The design and construction of the boot are classic. The Pecos style has been popular for many years for a good reason. I can easily see myself wearing these boots for many more years without any issues.
The Red Wing Chemigum sole and heel have held up very well. The sole feels dense yet lightweight at the same time. Considering how much I’ve worn these boots, I’m surprised at how little wear there is on the heel.
I’ve enjoyed every part of owning these boots. They’ve been reliable, comfortable, and versatile for both work and everyday use. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a durable, classic boot.
