Wootten
Sgt. Pepper
Wootten
This 'Dome has involved a lot of travel, a lot of work and a bit of play. The best part about the Peppers is that they can really flex to a lot of occasions, especially in Australia with a quintessential chelsea silhouette. Have a wedding? Bit of a buff and easy with a navy suit. Work days at the office? Easy on easy off. Flights? A dream. Out on the farm? They can get it done. Snow in Shanghai to Western Australian country back roads, these boots have been on tour.
This waxxed saddle tan is an Australian sourced and produced leather and has head up remarkably well over the summer. It has a versatile mid/chocolate brown colour with a great pull-up showing a brighter yellow undertone that shows it's off across the forefoot now with wear. It has handled a few big summer storms, and a lot of dusty outback track without issue. The break-in has been really easy as a Chelsea boot tends to be, this leather is more substantial than others I've owned in this boot shape and that has contributed to a sense of robustness and support. The rolls have formed up in the forefoot and are voluminous reflecting the gauge of the leather. These boots have been cared for as normal during the 'Dome, usually having an application of a colourless Australian beeswax-based leather conditioner once per month.
This last and size couldn't better fit my feet. Wootten and I went back and forward a few times trying to lock in a size, sending and receiving samples until we arrived at the perfect size. No shortcuts when you are trying to build a forever boot! A Chelsea boot doesn't have many structural elements to hide behind in regard to support and comfort - if the boot doesn't fit perfectly the wearer does get the support of the fitted arch, and the heel cup doesn't lockin with that classic thunk. When you have the right fit, as with the Peppers, you can do about anything, there's nothing spare, no wobble or slide, no folding or slumping of the leather. This is as close as I've been to a bespoke feeling fit.
Wootten's quality and finish are of the highest class, and with a proudly Australian workshop it's really the core of this 'Dome. How Australian can we build a Downthunderdome boot? It starts with a quintessentially Australian classic pattern, the Chelsea boot - ubiquitous as the Australian answer to a cowboy boot. Refined and tastefully embellished in the Sgt Pepper, Wootten has really delivered a classic for the discerning gentleman. I've never had quite so many enquiries about what I am wearing. Now - source the materials from Australia? A challenge for sure, from the rubber to the brass, leather and pull tabs - Australia has outsourced so much of its manufacturing that it's a real dedication to source these things locally. Jess even had to step up and fashion the toe cap by hand and from scratch just to meet the brief. What a legend.
It was kinda heart breaking to burn through the leather sole, the finish when it arrived was amazing. It has held up so well, I've continued to be amazed - I'm actually not loosing very much material from the sole despite doing a lot of pavement pounding and road walking. Only now am I starting to break through and disrupt the hidden stitch channel. The toe cap has been helpful in preserving the silhouette and shape without impacting the ability of the boot to age freely. It gives a satisfying click on hard surfaces, and has taken on a life of its own moulding with the boot with use, scuffing up and bedding in. Some of the screws are totally set in and can probably never come out. Super happy with the choice to go with the toe cap, it makes for a really unique boot.
In a 'Dome season I'm dedicated to wearing a boot the way it was meant to be worn and cared for. That's important to understanding longevity and build quality, and for appreciating the use-case for each boot. This pair of Peppers has come the goods with a gentleman's office type of patina, reflecting the love and care they were put together with, and treated with. They are truly a staple of the boot stable now, and will remain for years to come.
