R.M. Williams is an Australian brand that produces footwear and clothing. The company is based in Adelaide, South Australia, and was established in 1932.
Reginald Murray Williams founded R.M. Williams in 1932 after learning leather-working from Michael George Smith, known as "Dollar Mick," in the Flinders Ranges. The two created a boot using a single piece of leather.
In 1934, Williams shifted operations to Adelaide and opened a small factory in his father's shed in Prospect. The company expanded production over the years and became a nationally recognized outfitter.
In 1988, Williams sold the company. R.M. Williams changed ownership multiple times before Andrew Forrest's Tattarang investment company acquired it in October 2020.
R.M. Williams manufactures its leather boots, belts, small leather goods, and a portion of its apparel and accessories at a workshop in Adelaide.
In 2019, the company announced plans to double its annual boot output to 500,000 pairs by 2023.
R.M. Williams boots are made using over 80 hand-held processes. The upper part of the boot is formed from a single piece of leather.
The company uses Goodyear welt construction, where the sole is stitched to the boot using a leather strip along the edge. This method produces a boot that can last for many years.
R.M. Williams is known for handcrafted riding boots made with single-piece leather uppers and a rear stitch.
The brand makes different boot models, including the Classic RM, which is a Chelsea-style boot with a chisel square toe and low-block heel. The Gardener boot is another model, designed with a higher heel block and treaded welt sole.
Alongside boots, R.M. Williams also makes leather goods, apparel, and accessories with design inspiration from the Australian outback.
