About

The Highliner is a climbing boot manufactured by Wesco Boots since its introduction in 1938. Designed specifically for power, telephone, and cable utility workers as well as arborists, the boot features specialized construction elements including a recessed metal heel breastplate for protection from climbing spurs and asymmetric steel shanks for enhanced foot support during climbing operations.

The Highliner represents over 85 years of specialized boot design, incorporating Wesco's 155-step manufacturing process that has been refined since the company's founding in 1918. Available in both 10-inch and 16-inch heights as models 9710 and 9716 respectively, the boot maintains its focus on providing utility workers with reliable protection and support for demanding climbing applications.

History

Wesco introduced the Highliner in 1938 as part of their specialized work boot line targeting utility workers and climbing professionals. The boot's development occurred two decades after Wesco's founding by John H. Shoemaker in 1918 in Portland, Oregon. The company relocated to Scappoose, Oregon in 1933, where the Highliner and other specialized boots continued to be manufactured using traditional American craftsmanship methods.

The Highliner's introduction coincided with the expansion of electrical and telephone infrastructure across America, creating demand for specialized climbing boots that could protect utility workers during line work and tree maintenance operations. The boot became established among linemen, telephone workers, and arborists who required reliable foot protection during climbing activities.

Construction

The Highliner features 7 oz. full-grain leather construction throughout the boot structure. The design incorporates a non-corrosive, ribbed steel shank that provides comfort and maximum support during extended climbing periods. A critical safety feature is the recessed metal heel breastplate, specifically engineered to offer protection from climbing spurs commonly used by utility workers.

Additional construction elements include asymmetric steel shanks designed to follow the individual shape of left and right feet, enhancing comfort and support during use. The boot includes a leather half-slip measuring 10 to 10-1/2 iron (.219 inches thick) for added arch support. Solid brass studs and eyelets are used throughout the construction, secured with heavy white thread stitching. The lace-to-toe design ensures full support and adjustability across the entire foot.

Both the removable false tongue and leather side flap provide additional protection and customization options. The construction process follows Wesco's traditional 155-step manufacturing procedure, with all boots manufactured in the United States at the company's Scappoose, Oregon facility.

Specifications

The Highliner is available in two primary height configurations: the 10-inch model 9710 and the 16-inch model 9716. The 10-inch version retails for $497.00, while the 16-inch model is priced at $530.00. Both models feature the same core construction elements and materials but differ in shaft height to accommodate different working conditions and personal preferences.

The boots are constructed with a lace-to-toe design and include Vibram outsoles for superior traction during climbing operations. Stock versions of the Highliner do not include steel toes or steel side plates, focusing instead on flexibility and comfort for climbing applications. The boots are available through specialty work boot retailers and authorized Wesco dealers across the United States.

Custom variations of the Highliner can be ordered through Wesco's custom boot program, though lead times may extend significantly due to the handcrafted manufacturing process. Some retailers have reported extended lead times for stock orders as well, reflecting the specialized nature of the boot and its manufacturing requirements.

Use and Applications

The Highliner is designed specifically for utility workers engaged in climbing activities, including power line technicians, telephone and cable installers, and professional arborists. The boot's specialized features address the unique safety and performance requirements of workers who must climb poles, towers, and trees as part of their professional duties.

The recessed heel breastplate provides crucial protection against climbing spurs, while the asymmetric steel shanks and arch support help reduce fatigue during extended climbing sessions. The full-grain leather construction offers durability against the harsh conditions commonly encountered in utility work environments.

Linemen and other utility professionals have relied on the Highliner for over eight decades within the industry. The boot's design continues to serve the needs of workers who require specialized footwear for safe and effective climbing operations in various industrial and utility applications.
