Design and Construction
The JH Classic employs Wesco's triple-stitched construction method for enhanced strength and durability. The shoe features a rolled-leather top facing and full-leather gusset and counter pocket construction. Each pair includes a permanently formed Stythermâ„¢ counter and heavy stitching throughout the design.
The construction incorporates a full-leather vamp and insole, supported by a non-corrosive, ribbed steel shank for arch support. The shoe uses a full-leather midsole rather than cork, consistent with Wesco's traditional construction methods. OrthoLite Drilex Comfort Foam Slip-In Inserts are included for additional comfort.
The leather used in construction follows Wesco's "directional" cutting process, where each piece for each boot is cut from the optimal part of the hide for that specific component. Vibram® soles are available, and customers can opt for steel toe protection.
History
The JH Classic takes its name from John Henry Shoemaker, who founded West Coast Shoe Company (Wesco Boots) in 1918. Shoemaker originally established the company in Portland, Oregon, gearing production almost exclusively toward shoes for the logging industry and specially crafting each pair to withstand the rigors of hard-working customers.
The company relocated to Scappoose, Oregon in 1931 during the Great Depression, where Wesco continues to operate today. The company has remained in the Shoemaker family for four generations and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2018.
Customization and Options
The JH Classic is available only through custom order, with customers able to build their shoes from multiple available options. The customization process allows for various lace-up configurations and sole choices. Current pricing for custom JH Classics is $409.95.
Manufacturing takes place at Wesco's Scappoose, Oregon facility using the company's 155-step hand-crafting process. Custom orders currently require 12-13 months to manufacture due to the detailed construction process and high demand.
The shoes are designed for versatility, serving customers who need footwear suitable for both work environments and off-duty wear. This dual-purpose design reflects Wesco's heritage of creating durable footwear while adapting to modern lifestyle needs.
