About

The Timber is a logging boot model manufactured by Wesco, designed specifically for forestry workers and loggers operating with heavy equipment on steep terrain. Available in multiple configurations including 12" and 16" heights, the Timber features replaceable calks (specialized metal spikes) for traction on challenging surfaces and incorporates full-grain leather construction with stitchdown manufacturing methods.

With origins steeped in Oregon logger tradition, the Timber maintains its status as a specialized work boot after nearly a century of production. The model is available through Wesco's custom boot builder system as well as stock configurations, with current production taking place at the company's Scappoose, Oregon facility using traditional hand-crafting techniques developed over four generations of the Shoemaker family.

Specifications

The Wesco Timber is manufactured in three distinct model configurations, each designed for specific logging applications. The 1912SI features a 12-inch height with lace-to-toe design, while the 2912SI offers a 12-inch height with regular toe construction. The 2916SI extends to 16-inch height with regular toe configuration, providing enhanced protection for challenging terrain work.

Pricing ranges from $599.00 to $646.00 depending on height and toe configuration, with the shorter 12-inch models priced at $611.00 and the taller 16-inch version at $646.00. All models are available in both medium (D) and wide (E) width options across sizes 8-13, accommodating the varied foot measurements required for professional logging work.

Weight specifications vary by configuration, with the 16-inch model weighing approximately 6 pounds and the 12-inch version at 3,629 grams. Each boot incorporates black smooth leather construction as standard, though custom options are available through Wesco's boot builder system for specialized applications.

Construction

The Timber employs full-grain leather construction throughout, featuring a rolled leather top facing and comprehensive leather components. The upper incorporates solid brass studs and eyelets with heavy white stitching designed for extra strength under demanding logging conditions. A permanently formed Stytherm counter provides structural support, while full leather gusseting and vamp lining with leather maintains durability and moisture management.

Internal construction includes sweat-resistant full leather insoles, full leather midsoles, and leather heel base components. The manufacturing process utilizes stitchdown construction methods, representing an evolution from the nailed construction techniques historically employed by Wesco. This construction change occurred in the 1980s as part of the company's modernization of traditional logging boot manufacturing.

The leather components are cut using directional cutting techniques, ensuring each piece for each boot is sourced from the optimal section of the hide rather than maximizing material efficiency. This approach prioritizes performance and durability over cost considerations, reflecting the boot's professional application requirements.

Caulk System

The Timber incorporates a replaceable calk system designed for logging professionals requiring superior traction on challenging terrain. Users can select between patented, riveted calks or Wesco's exclusive replacement calk system, allowing adaptation to varying work conditions without requiring complete boot replacement.

The calks are manufactured by a specialized company located approximately 10 minutes from Wesco's Scappoose facility, producing longer spikes in very hard steel specifically for logging applications. These removable metal spikes provide secure footing on steep slopes, wet logs, and other hazardous surfaces encountered in forestry work.

This caulk technology represents an advancement from earlier logging boot designs that featured non-replaceable riveted spikes and hobnails. The replaceable system allows workers to maintain optimal traction throughout the boot's service life while enabling calk removal when not required for specific tasks.

History

The Timber boot model traces its origins to the founding of Wesco by John H. Shoemaker in 1918, when Oregon served as the logging capital of the world. The company established its reputation in Oregon's timber camps, supplying boots specifically engineered for the demanding conditions of forestry work. These timber boots represented the initial boot model produced by Wesco, essentially their original spiked logging boots designed for professional forestry applications.

During the Great Depression, Wesco relocated operations from Portland to Scappoose, Oregon, where production continues today. The company nearly lost its entire business during this period but survived through the determination of the Shoemaker family, who continued manufacturing boots in the basement of their Scappoose home before establishing the current facility in 1933.

The manufacturing process evolved significantly over the decades, transitioning from nailed construction to full stitchdown methods in the 1980s. This change reflected both technological advancement and changing industry requirements while maintaining the fundamental logging boot characteristics developed during Oregon's timber boom era. Today, the Timber continues production using a 155-step hand-crafting process developed over four generations of family ownership, maintaining traditional techniques while incorporating modern safety and durability standards.
