The Mr. Grumpy Leather Slippers are a slipper model produced by WP Standard, designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The slippers originated from founder Ryan Barr's need for comfortable footwear during the 20-yard dash between his basement computer setup and his backyard prototype shed. The slippers feature stitchdown construction with a distinctive outsole design that combines leather and translucent rubber insets. The slippers retail between $128 and $158 depending on material selection, with a sheepskin-lined variant also available.
The Mr. Grumpy slippers use full-grain leather for the upper with a leather lining and cushioned heel. The olive version uses rich suede from a split of thick cowhide, resulting in a soft, lightweight nap. The manufacturer also offers variants in tan, black leather, blue, cowhide, and red wine colors.
The entire outsole unit is sewn directly to the upper using stitchdown construction, one of the oldest methods of footwear assembly. In this technique, the upper is spread outward and a rapid stitch goes through the upper, insole, and outsole, resulting in no stitches underfoot. The construction creates a durable attachment while maintaining comfort for the wearer.
The leather outsole measures approximately the thickness of a typical single leather outsole found on an oxford, which is notably thick for a slipper. The outsole features 15 holes, each approximately 0.5 inches in diameter, cut into the vegetable-tanned leather and filled with amber-hued translucent rubber. The design provides the look and feel of a leather outsole while adding grip to prevent slipping. The rubber used is soft and designed primarily for traction rather than long-term durability.
The slippers are available in sizes seven through 11.5 for men and sizes five through 10 for women. The leather lining with cushioned heel provides extra comfort as the slippers break in and adjust to the contours of the wearer's feet. Out of the box, the slippers are fairly stiff due to the thick outsole, but they break in relatively quickly and become more like a glove for the feet.
The manufacturer suggests sizing up if uncertain, due to limited size runs.
WP Standard offers the Mr. Grumpy in multiple material options. The standard versions use full-grain leather in tan and black, or suede in olive. Additional colors include blue, cowhide, and red wine. A sheepskin-lined version is available with thick sheepskin lining for warmth, all leather soles, and cushioned heels.
