About

The Greenflex is a desert boot manufactured by Astorflex, an Italian footwear company based in Mantova. Introduced as part of the company's eco-friendly footwear line, the boot features vegetable-tanned leather, natural rubber soles, and traditional stitchdown construction methods passed down through six generations of the Travenzoli family. The Greenflex represents Astorflex's commitment to sustainable production while maintaining traditional Italian shoemaking techniques.

Available in three colorways—Dark Chestnut, Dark Khaki, and Whisky—the boot combines a classic chukka silhouette with environmentally conscious materials and water-based adhesives throughout its construction.

Construction

The Greenflex utilizes stitchdown construction, a method Astorflex refers to as the "Ideal" technique. This construction features outer stitching along the edge of the sole, creating a wider platform that provides increased stability underfoot. The stitchdown method allows the boots to be recrafted, extending their lifespan through repair rather than replacement.

The boot's upper is made from premium European leather that undergoes a 30-day aging process in a mixture of water, oak bark, and powdered mimosa. This vegetable-tanning process produces leather over 2.5mm thick that is then softened through natural drum treatment in a water immersion bath. The leather is finished with animal fats and aniline dyes, resulting in a supple suede material that is hypoallergenic and breathable.

Materials

Upper and Lining

The Greenflex features uppers made from 100% vegetable-tanned calf leather sourced from Tuscan tanneries. The tanning process uses no chromium-containing chemicals, relying instead on purely vegetable tannins obtained from oak bark and mimosa. The leather receives no synthetic dyes or color finishes, maintaining its natural properties.

The interior lining consists of soft, undyed leather that adapts quickly to the wearer's feet. A comfort memory foam footbed topped with leather provides cushioning and support, molding to individual foot contours over time.

Midsole and Outsole

A vegetable-tanned hard leather midsole provides structure and durability between the insole and outsole. The outsole consists of 100% natural crepe made from coagulated latex extracted from the Hevea Brasiliensis rubber tree. This natural rubber sole contains no chemicals or petroleum derivatives and is fully recyclable. The crepe material offers flexibility and grip while providing cushioning comfort.

Assembly

All components of the Greenflex are assembled using water-based adhesives exclusively, eliminating solvent-based glues from the production process. This assembly method aligns with Astorflex's environmental standards while maintaining the structural integrity required for a recraftable boot.

Sizing and Fit

The Greenflex tends to run large compared to American sizing standards. Astorflex recommends sizing down one full size from standard American measurements. For example, a wearer who typically takes a Nike size 11 should select size 43 in the Greenflex. The boot is manufactured in European sizing without half sizes, which can make finding the precise fit more difficult for those between sizes.

Pricing and Availability

Retail pricing for the Greenflex ranges from approximately 200 to 215 USD through various retailers. Sale prices have been documented as low as 130 USD during promotional periods. The boot became available through retailers including Amazon starting September 4, 2024, as part of Astorflex's Fall-Winter 2024 collection.
