Petrolio is a distinctive blue-green color variant of Minerva Liscio vegetable tanned leather produced by Badalassi Carlo tannery in Tuscany, Italy. The name "petrolio" translates from Italian as "petroleum," describing a sophisticated grayish-blue shade with green undertones that is darker than teal with more blue than green. This color is available across multiple Badalassi Carlo leather lines including Minerva Liscio, NoFin, and Pueblo.
Petrolio Minerva Liscio is produced on vegetable tanned square shoulders using traditional methods practiced at Badalassi Carlo's Tuscany tannery for over 40 years. The leather features an aniline finish surface that creates a natural appearance while allowing the full color range to show through. After tanning, the leather is hand-dyed and hand-stuffed with a currying mix containing a special blend of Italian fat wax, giving it the characteristic hand and feel associated with Minerva Liscio.
The leather is drier than heavily fat and wax-stuffed leathers, making it quick to scratch. These surface scratches add depth and texture as the leather ages, contributing to the development of a rich patina over time.
Petrolio Minerva Liscio develops a smooth, shiny patina with wear through a burnishing effect. Dark tones emerge where the surface is polished by frequent or heavy use, as the polished surface better renders the full range of petroleum blue-green color beneath. This burnishing creates a distinctive aging pattern that highlights areas of regular contact and use, making each piece unique to its wear pattern.
Oak Street Bootmakers uses Petrolio Minerva Liscio for Trench Boots and other heritage footwear styles. Unsung Bootmakers offers Coachman boots in this color. The leather is popular among heritage boot enthusiasts for its aging characteristics and distinctive petroleum hue that develops character with wear.
