The model was conceived as a closed-toe alternative to the company's sandal offerings, providing year-round wearability. College students became early adopters in the late 1980s, particularly in the Midwest and near college campuses, helping establish the Boston's cultural presence beyond its original utilitarian purpose.

The Boston features Birkenstock's anatomically shaped cork and latex footbed, constructed from natural cork, natural latex, jute, and suede. The footbed includes deep heel molding that supports foot tissue and holds the heel bone in its natural position. The clog utilizes a two-component sole system with an EVA midsole for cushioning and a rubber outsole for slip resistance.
