C.F. Stead Emerald Green Janus Calf Suede

Leather Color

About

C.F. Stead Emerald Green Janus Calf Suede is a color variant of Janus Calf Suede, a full-grain calf leather produced by British tannery C.F. Stead. The leather features a deep emerald green finish applied to C.F. Stead's Janus Calf Suede base material, which combines a luxurious silky suede surface with a natural full-grain aniline reverse side.

Emerald green represents one of several color options available in the Janus Calf Suede line, a leather type that has maintained an unchanged tanning recipe for 50 years and was originally developed for Northampton's traditional welted shoemakers. The leather is used primarily in heritage footwear applications, appearing in boots from makers including Viberg.

Material and construction

C.F. Stead manufactures emerald green Janus Calf Suede from selected young calf skins using a tanning process that has remained unchanged for five decades. The production yields a full-grain leather with tighter fiber structure compared to split suede, providing enhanced water resistance and durability.

The leather maintains the signature dual-sided construction of all Janus Calf Suede variants. One side presents a finely textured, silky suede nap in the emerald green color, while the reverse displays the natural full-grain surface with aniline finish. This construction allows the suede side to serve as the primary exterior surface while the grain side can be used for trim applications.

Technical specifications for Janus Calf Suede include an average skin size of 13 to 15 square feet, with thickness ranging from 1.4 to 1.6 millimeters. Leather distributors offer the material in sizes of 16 to 19 square feet with a weight of 3.5 to 4.5 ounces. The handle is described as "a touch firmer than soft," providing structure while maintaining the characteristic feel of quality suede.

Characteristics

The emerald green colorway applies a deep green finish to the suede surface while preserving the natural performance characteristics of Janus Calf Suede. The leather's full-grain construction provides greater structural integrity than split suede alternatives, with tighter fibers that resist moisture penetration more effectively.

The suede surface maintains a silky, smooth appearance characteristic of calf leather, with a finely textured nap that develops a natural patina through use. Each hide exhibits individual variations in grain pattern and color depth. The leather gradually molds to the shape of footwear during wear while maintaining dimensional stability over time.

The aniline-finished reverse side displays the natural grain structure of the calf hide, providing a complementary aesthetic for applications where both sides may be visible. The dual-sided nature references the leather's name, derived from the Roman god Janus, known for having two faces.

Applications

Emerald green Janus Calf Suede is used primarily in high-end footwear construction, particularly for heritage boots and shoes that employ traditional welted construction methods. The leather suits Goodyear welted applications and can be worn year-round in various climates.

Canadian bootmaker Viberg has produced Scout Boots using C.F. Stead emerald green Janus Calf Suede, demonstrating the leather's application in contemporary heritage footwear. The material's structure and water resistance make it suitable for boots intended for regular wear rather than purely decorative purposes.

The leather requires minimal maintenance, typically limited to occasional brushing to maintain the nap and periodic application of water-repellent treatments. The suede side serves as the primary exterior surface in most applications, while the grain side may be incorporated as trim detail or interior lining depending on the maker's design approach.
