Janus Calf Suede is produced from selected young calf skins processed to create a full-grain leather rather than a split hide.[1][2] This full-grain construction results in tighter leather fibers, providing increased structure and enhanced water resistance compared to split suede.[2] The suede side features a finely textured nap on smaller skins, creating the characteristic silky, smooth appearance.[2]

The leather undergoes an aniline finishing process on the reverse grain side, maintaining the natural characteristics of the hide.[1][3] Each hide displays unique individual variations due to the natural properties of the leather.[2]

Charles F. Stead, established over a century ago in Leeds, developed Janus Calf Suede specifically for the traditional shoemaking industry centered in Northampton, England.[2] The tannery has maintained the original tanning recipe for 50 years without modification.[2]

The manufacturing process takes approximately 28 days and involves 15 production stages, with hides primarily sourced from Argentina and New Zealand.[4] During processing, suede loses 15 to 30 percent of its initial surface area.[4]

Janus Calf Suede is available in two standard sizing configurations. The manufacturer specifies an average skin size of 13 to 15 square feet with a thickness of 1.4 to 1.6 millimeters.[1] Distributors offer hides ranging from 16 to 19 square feet, with a weight specification of 3.5 to 4.5 ounces (1.4 to 1.8 millimeters).[3]

The handle is described as "a touch firmer than soft," providing structure while maintaining flexibility.[1][2][3] The suede side is intended as the primary wearing surface, while the grain side is recommended for trim applications only.[1][3]
