Kudu Classic is a full-grain leather with a glossy finish produced by Charles F. Stead, featuring natural markings from wild Greater Kudu antelope hides. The leather provides a more formal alternative to the casual Kudu Waxy variant, with a pronounced grain and classic gloss finish suited for heritage footwear applications. C.F. Stead developed the Kudu Classic as part of their antelope leather range, which emphasizes the distinctive characteristics of African kudu hides while offering refined aesthetics for traditional footwear styles.
The Greater Kudu is a large woodland antelope native to Eastern and Southern Africa. Kudus graze amongst sharp, thorny trees in the African savanna, creating natural scars and scratches on their hides that are preserved during the tanning process. These markings contribute to each hide's unique appearance and character.
The hides are as soft as deerskin but significantly thicker and more durable, providing a combination of softness and strength. Charles F. Stead works with African communities to source hides, which arrive at the tannery pre-treated through either mineral chrome or plant-based processes before undergoing the company's specialized re-tannage procedures.
Kudu Classic leather is supplied in skins averaging 13 to 15 square feet, with thickness ranging from 1.6 to 2.2 millimeters. Alternative measurements cite the leather at 4.5 to 5.5 ounces (1.8 to 2.2 millimeters) with approximate skin sizes of 11 square feet. The leather features a full-grain structure with a semi-aniline finish, maintaining the natural texture and blemishes of the source hide.
The leather readily burnishes, developing deeper color tones with handling and wear. Available colors include black, Caramel, Camel, Autumn Spice, Polo Brown, Crimson, and Sign, though the natural variations in each hide mean no two pieces are identical.
The Kudu Classic distinguishes itself through its glossy finish, contrasting with the matte appearance of Kudu Waxy leather. The grain is more pronounced than the waxed variant, providing a refined, polished surface suitable for formal footwear styles. While natural marks and scratches from the animal's life remain visible, the gloss finish presents these characteristics in a more subtle, elegant manner compared to the heavily textured appearance of casual kudu leathers.
The semi-aniline finish allows the leather's natural grain to show through while providing a protective surface layer. This finishing technique preserves the distinctive texture that kudus develop during their lives in the wild, making each piece of leather visually unique.
Kudu Classic leather requires regular maintenance to preserve its appearance and extend its lifespan. Initial cleaning involves removing loose dirt with a soft bristle brush, followed by treating any tough stains with mild leather soap. After cleaning, a small amount of leather cream should be applied across the entire surface.
Conditioning prevents the leather from becoming dry and brittle. Leather cream or balm should be worked directly into the material using a soft cloth. The leather may resist absorbing conditioner initially, requiring patience for full absorption. Proper storage involves keeping conditioned items in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight, ideally in a lint-free bag to prevent dust accumulation.
