Rambler is a shrunken fiber suede leather produced by Charles F. Stead tannery in Leeds, England. The leather is finished on the flesh-side with a hand-applied antique contrast beneath a blend of natural waxes, creating a marbled aesthetic with depth of color and texture.
The hide is shrunken by approximately 30% during the manufacturing process, producing a tighter grain structure that increases strength, water resistance, and durability compared to non-shrunken suede. This shrinking process also reduces creasing and creates raised veining on the surface, making each piece unique. Rambler is classified as a double butt leather with chrome tannage, ranging in thickness from 1.2 to 2.2 mm with a weight of 4.5 to 5 ounces per square foot.
The manufacturing process for Rambler involves shrinking the hide by roughly 30%, which condenses the grain structure and increases the leather's water resistance. The flesh-side finish receives an antique contrast applied by hand, with colors blended to complement the base dying. Natural waxes are applied during finishing to enhance water resistance and create the leather's characteristic appearance.
The leather undergoes chrome tannage and is classified as a double butt type. Average skin sizes range from 9 to 11 square feet for Acorn colorway and 14 to 16 square feet for Stone, Squirrel, and Winter Smoke colorways.
The shrinking process produces a tighter, denser fiber structure that makes the leather stronger, more waterproof, and more durable than standard suede. The condensed grain structure is nearly waterproof from the shrinking alone, with the wax stuffing and application further enhancing water resistance. The leather demonstrates reduced creasing compared to non-shrunken alternatives.
When the fibers shrink, veining appears slightly raised on the surface, embracing the natural markings of the hide and making each piece one of a kind. The hand-blended antique colors beneath the natural waxes create a unique marbled aesthetic with authentic rugged appearance and depth of color.
Available colors include Acorn, Stone, Squirrel (blue), and Winter Smoke. The leather's thickness ranges between 1.2 and 2.2 mm, with a weight specification of 4.5 to 5 ounces (1.8 to 2 mm).
The leather should be cleaned with plain water and a clean brush. Occasional application of wax is recommended when the leather appears dry. To prevent drying, occasional application of conditioner such as Leather Protector or Leather Cream is advised, using a horse hair brush designated only for conditioner with swift, intentional movements.
For water resistance maintenance, Leather Protector should be applied to all seams in addition to the upper leather. Alternative care methods include spot cleaning, brushing, and applying waterproofing spray or wax balm. The conditioning frequency depends on individual lifestyle and climate conditions.
Rambler leather is used by multiple heritage footwear manufacturers. Truman Boot Co. offers various styles including Stone Rambler and Coach Rambler configurations. Parkhurst Brand produces boots in Rambler leather including The Richmond and The Allen models, available in colorways such as Frostbite Rambler, Blue Depths Rambler, Inferno Rambler, and Walnut Rambler.
