C.F. Stead Coach Rambler is a colorway of Rambler leather produced by Charles F. Stead tannery in Leeds, England. The leather is a chrome-tanned, shrunken fiber suede finished on the flesh-side with a hand-applied antique contrast beneath a blend of natural waxes. Coach Rambler features a color range from light apricot to burnt orange to vermillion with significant variation in tonality and a natural marbled aesthetic. Truman Boot Co. first introduced Coach Rambler boots in 2015, and the leather has since become one of the company's signature offerings.
Coach Rambler is produced as a double butt with an average skin size of 12 to 14 square feet. The leather has a thickness of 4.5 ounces, approximately 1.8 millimeters, with production specifications allowing a range between 1.2 and 2.2 millimeters. The hide undergoes chrome tannage before the finishing process.
The leather features a shrunken fiber suede construction with a tight grain structure. The shrinking process creates a highly textured surface that includes veining and other natural markings. Each piece exhibits one-of-a-kind variations due to the intense differences in hides and batch-to-batch production methods.
Coach Rambler exhibits a mixed, matte finish with a color palette ranging from light apricot through burnt orange to vermillion. The leather displays significant variation in tonality that makes uniform assessment difficult. Individual pieces show high and low tones, with some areas presenting more orange and yellow hues while others shift toward red and even subtle purple tones.
The hand-applied antique contrast beneath the wax blend creates a natural marbled aesthetic. The antique colors are blended to complement the base dying, producing depth of color and texture characteristic of the leather's rugged appearance.
The leather has a firm stiffness when new and follows a typical break-in experience, responding quickly to wear. The wax application from the tanning process initially provides water resistance, though this protection decreases as the leather is worn over time.
Coach Rambler has a patina potential rated at three out of ten. The textured surface can hide and blend nicks and scuffs during use, making the leather suitable for varied applications. The combination of characteristics has led to the leather being described as a versatile option.
Truman Boot Co. maintains rotational stock of Coach Rambler boots. The leather's availability varies based on production cycles and tannery output.
