The Chelsea 5 is a Chelsea boot manufactured by Crockett & Jones in Northampton, England. Introduced as part of the company's Main Collection, the boot features Goodyear welted construction and is built on Last 335, characterized by a broad round toe and increased toe depth.
The Chelsea 5 represents Crockett & Jones' interpretation of the Chelsea boot style, which originated in Victorian England in 1837 when Queen Victoria's bootmaker J Sparkes-Hall created elastic-sided ankle boots for equestrian use. By the 1890s, these boots had been adopted by equestrians across England and were known as "paddock boots" before being renamed "Chelsea boots" during the 1950s and 1960s London fashion era when celebrities such as the Beatles and Rolling Stones popularized the style.
The Chelsea 5 employs Goodyear welt construction, a traditional English manufacturing method that allows for multiple resoles. Each pair takes up to eight weeks to manufacture and involves over 200 skilled operations performed at the company's Northampton factory.
The boot features a double Dainite rubber sole produced by Harborough Rubber Company in the United Kingdom. Dainite soles have been manufactured since the early 1900s and are known for their studded pattern, which provides durability and traction. The sole weighs 2.5 kg per pair.
The Chelsea 5 is constructed on Last 335, which originated in June 2000. This last features a broad round toe and increased toe depth, producing what the company describes as a heavy but stylish boot. The design offers generous room in the forepart and is cut from the same pattern as Last 325, though with a more substantial appearance. The toe shape is aesthetically similar to Crockett & Jones lasts 236, 376, 314, and 363.
Last 335 fits true to size and is comparable to the company's lasts 341, 365, and 325. It is considered one of Crockett & Jones' roomier lasts, with some wearers able to size down half a size. The boot is offered in standard E width fitting and is available in sizes 6 through 12 in half-size increments.
The Chelsea 5 is produced in multiple leather options. The dark brown waxed calf version uses European calf skin with a soft tannage for comfort and features a waxy finish suitable for smart casual wear. This version provides added water resistance and retails for £605 in the United Kingdom.
The boot is also available in dark brown rough-out suede, marketed as providing water resistance, which retails for approximately $740 in the United States. Additional versions include natural rough-out suede, black rough-out suede, and antique nubuck leather. The antique nubuck features a waxy surface that can accept polish despite its textured finish.
