The Galway 2 is a high-leg apron front derby boot manufactured by Crockett & Jones. Built on Last 325 with Fitting E and featuring storm welt construction with a Dainite rubber sole, the Galway 2 was produced in the company's Northampton, England factory. The boot combines a hand-pulled apron derby upper with a chunky eyelet and speed hook configuration designed for country and casual wear. While featured in the Main Collection and highlighted in the Autumn/Winter 2015 product spotlight, the Galway 2 is now discontinued.
The Galway 2 was available in multiple leather options including Dark Brown Country Calf with embossed grain finish and Scotch Grain. The boot required over 200 highly skilled operations and up to eight weeks to manufacture.
The Galway 2 features Goodyear welted construction built on Last 325, which provides a medium round toe and increased toe depth compared to other Crockett & Jones lasts. The boot uses Fitting E, equivalent to a medium width in US sizing and considered standard width in UK sizing. The storm welt construction provides additional weather protection by positioning the welt higher on the boot upper, creating a barrier against water infiltration.
The sole construction uses Dainite rubber in dark brown, a proprietary compound developed for durability and traction in wet conditions. The manufacturing process involves channeling cork filling between the insole and outsole during construction, with wooden shanks added for arch support before the final welt stitching secures the sole.
The boot features an apron front derby construction, where the upper panels are stitched over a raised apron piece that extends from toe to vamp. This traditional design originated in Norwegian and American work boots before being adapted for country footwear. The closure system combines four traditional eyelets in the lower portion with four speed hooks above, allowing for quick lacing adjustment in the upper shaft while maintaining secure lacing through the eyelet section.
Standard versions included contrast laces to complement the Dark Brown Country Calf leather.
The primary leather option for the Galway 2 was Dark Brown Country Calf, described by Crockett & Jones as soft, supple, and rich in texture and color. This leather receives an embossed grain finish during tanning, creating a pebbled surface texture that provides visual interest and practical durability in field conditions. The grain embossing also helps disguise minor scratches and scuffs that occur during regular wear.
Alternative leather options included Scotch Grain, a heavily embossed leather with larger grain patterns that provides additional texture and visual depth.
The Galway 2 was available in UK sizes 6 through 13, including half sizes throughout the range. Last 325, used as the foundation for this boot, runs true to size according to Crockett & Jones but provides a roomier fit compared to dress shoe lasts from the same manufacturer. The Fitting E width corresponds to a US D width, representing the standard width fitting in both British and American sizing systems.
The increased toe depth of Last 325 accommodates higher-volume feet and allows room for heavier sock weights appropriate for country boot applications. The roomy fit characteristic reduces the need for extended break-in periods typical of dress boots constructed on narrower lasts.
The Galway 2 was featured in Crockett & Jones' Autumn/Winter 2015 product spotlight and appeared in the Gentleman's Journal March 2018 "Business Class" feature, indicating active production and promotion during that period. As of the manufacturer's current product catalog, the Galway 2 is listed as discontinued with all sizes showing as unavailable on the official website.
